Guidelines for Scholarship Program

Ethnic Minority Students

Commission on Religion and Race (CORR)

Northwest Texas Conference of The United Methodist Church

Purpose: The purpose of this scholarship is to develop Christian leaders in the community and The United Methodist Church among persons from an ethnic minority.

The applicant must meet the following minimal requirements:

●  Is an active or affiliate member of The United Methodist Church (UMC) in the Northwest Texas (NWTX) Conference for one year just prior to the application.

●  Identifies as a constituent of a racial ethnic caucus as defined in the UMC Book of Discipline including African American, Native American, Hispanic, Asian-American, or Pacific Islander.

●  Will attend a seminary, college, university, or trade school that will prepare the student to better serve The United Methodist Church.

●  Is confirmed to be a member by the pastor of the church where the student indicates he/she is a member or in the case where the applicant is a pastor, the district superintendent will confirm membership. In the case where a new pastor does not know the applicant well enough to give a recommendation, the previous pastor may make the recommendation.

●  Submits a completed application packet. Completed application packet must be received by May 1 for the Summer Semester, August 1 for the Fall Semester, or January 1 for the Spring Semester. For educational programs not on the typical semester format, the application should be received by August 1 or January 1 just before the semester begins.

●  Has maintained a passing grade in previous academic enrollment and appears likely to succeed in the chosen academic discipline.

●  Appears likely to assume a greater leadership role in the NWTX Conference of the UMC.

Priority will be given based on the CORR team evaluation of the following criteria:

●  The applicant describes clearly how their education will prepare them to be a leader in The United Methodist Church.

●  The applicant presents evidence that their pastor or district superintendent believes they will succeed in school and use their education to better serve in a leadership position in The United Methodist Church.

●  The applicant presents evidence of the capacity to succeed in school in the form of an official transcript.

●  If the applicant is an entering freshman, the applicant will present evidence that the applicant has been admitted to the educational program.

●  Funding will usually be considered in the following priority:

1.) students in programs that clearly are meant to prepare the student for leadership in The United Methodist Church.

3.) students in programs that may prepare the student for leadership in The United Methodist Church.

4.) students in programs unrelated to leadership in The United Methodist Church will usually not be funded.

The application packet must include:

●  The completed Student Application Form

●  The completed Pastor or District Superintendent Certification of Membership Form

●  An official transcript from the student’s most recent semester from the high school, college, seminary, or university where the student attended

●  Evidence that the student has been accepted into an educational program, if the applicant is an entering freshman

It is important to note that the individual who completes the Certification of Membership Form for the scholarship applicant will be made aware of the application status and the award decision of the CORR Team.
