SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES

FELLOWSHIP – led by Bill Wiemers. The class is studying “The book of Philippians”. New members and visitors are welcome to join in. The class meets in Fellow Ship Hall, located near the Sanctuary.

JOHN WESLEY – led by Barbara Hudson. The class is studying “The book of Galatians”. Study guides are available.

NOMADS’ – Nomad’s class will be studying “The End of Me” DVD series by Kyle Idleman. In this lesson we will explore the paths that lead us to Jesus. As we come to the end of ourselves we realize that we aren’t strong enough, smart enough or talented enough to navigate life on our own. That is when we are in the best position to be used by God.

SEEKERS – The Seekers class is studying the "AHA" series by Kyle Idleman. The study is a DVD assisted study centered around the parable of the prodigal son in Luke 15. "AHA"is an acronymforAwakening, Honesty, & Action. All are invited to join.

LIFE WITH GOD - Young Adult/College Age Sunday School Class. It is for single or married adults, college age into their 20’s. As we start out we will do a video/discussion relative to Christian life, in a sometime confusing world. The class will be dynamic and those attending can shape it to the desires of the group. The discussions will initially be led by Pastor Lee. The class meets in theformer Nomads room of the Activity Center. If you are not involved in a Sunday School class and you are college age or a young adult, come join us.

YOUTH - Join us in the Youth Room as we finish our series on REVOLUTION with topics of Doubt and Impact. Then we begin our 6 week series on Woodlawn (the movie) as we learn about teamwork, race divisions, student leadership and how to make change with the help of God.

CHILDREN – The curriculum used for Nursery, PreK-5th Grade is “Planting Faith, Growing Faith”. All classrooms are accessed from the hallway by the church office.

Pastoral Prayer / The Lord’s Prayer – All

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those

Who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen

Our Mission Statement

The mission of the Congregation of the First United Methodist Church is to continue to be a committed fellowship of disciples sharing the love of God through Jesus Christ and furnishing a place of Christian worship, programs, services and facilities for its members and the people of the Johnson City area.

Teddy Bear Ministry

You are invited to hold a bear during joys and concerns and then take it and give it to someone who needs a word of encouragement, healing, or up-lifting. We ask that you do not take one for yourself. We also welcome bears that you would like to donate. They don’t have to be new. We are able to clean most “old” bears.

*********************************************************************

We are in need of adding a nursery worker on staff.

If you are interested in the staff position, please call Ronnie Birck at the church office (830)868-7414.

Call to Worship BOW #406

Leader: And in the last days it shall come to pass, God declares, that I will

pour out my Spirit on all flesh,

All: And your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your old shall

dream dreams, and your young shall see visions.

Leader: When the Day of Pentecost had come, they were all gathered

together in one place.

All: And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

Leader: And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and

resting on each of them.

All: And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.

Prayer of Confession BOW #490

O merciful God, we confess that we have not acknowledged you as the source of our successes, our substance, our selves.

We have been far more ready to complain when things go wrong than to praise when all is well.

We have fed our bodies a rich diet while neglecting to feed our souls.

Power and wealth have assumed greater importance to us than sensitivity and service.

We have allowed religious words and forms to substitute for living encounters with the persons you have called us to love.

Forgive us, compassionate Redeemer, and grant us the opportunity to start over again.

Keep us from repeating the mistakes of the past or from new evils that could mislead or destroy.

In the name of Christ, we offer our earnest prayers for pardon and deliverance. Amen.

Words of Assurance

The Lord God is merciful and gracious, endlessly patient, loving, and true, showing mercy to thousands, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin, and granting pardon. Amen.

Today’s Scripture

Common English Bible

Luke 18:9-14

9Jesus told this parable to certain people who had convinced themselves that they were righteous and who looked on everyone else with disgust: 10“Two people went up to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed about himself with these words, ‘God, I thank you that I’m not like everyone else—crooks, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week. I give a tenth of everything I receive.’ 13 But the tax collector stood at a distance. He wouldn’t even lift his eyes to look toward heaven. Rather, he struck his chest and said, ‘God, show mercy to me, a sinner.’ 14 I tell you, this person went down to his home justified rather than the Pharisee. All who lift themselves up will be brought low, and those who make themselves low will be lifted up.”
