Engineer IV - Unix Administrator

Florida State College at Jacksonville, Jacksonville, FL January 2009 - present

Perform the installation and maintenance of Unix (Solaris 10 & 11) & Linux (RHEL & CentOS) operating systems and associated support services. Administer and maintain Solaris Volume Manager, soft partitions, mirroring, raid, ZFS, LVM, etc. Administer and maintain Solaris Zones and Logical Domains. Configure and maintain high-availability clustered systems, such as Student Portal, Employee Portal, and college ERP system. Configure and maintain Webmethods Integration Servers, Webmethods Optimize for Integration Servers, and Webmethods Entirex Servers utilizing Solaris and Tomcat. Configure and maintain college Crowd, Jira and Confluence Servers utilizing Solaris and Tomcat. Configure and maintain LAMP Web and Blog (WordPress) servers for students, faculty, and staff. Write software tools for programmers, system administrators and/or users to simplify their jobs and automate processes (Perl and shell scripts). Provide database administration on MySQL servers. Define and implement Active Directory authentication to Solaris & Linux, and AD authentication to web based applications.

Coordinate the planning and implementation of all College Unix activities (i.e. patch management and version upgrades) ensuring that all impacted areas are involved. Provide problem resolution, proactive prevention, detection and circumvention. Assist in the negotiation of contracts and procedures for maintenance of Unix hardware and software in order to provide a current, reliable Unix environment. Analyze current systems software, proposed modifications and new software for impact on installation problems, standards and procedures. Evaluate and make recommendations concerning the introduction of new hardware and software products onto the network. Maintain and utilize performance monitoring tools to identify potential system performance problems. Utilize diagnostic ability to perform fault isolation to include, but not be limited to, vendor software, user software, hardware, procedure and data medium. Research and evaluate Cloud based solutions which could benefit the college.

Avidyne Corp, Melbourne, FL October 2007 - March 2008

Provided on site support for Avidyne’s Melbourne offices and backup support of out of state offices. Servers are a mix of Windows 2000, Windows 2003, and Linux. Desktops and laptops are primarily Windows XP with some Linux machines. Maintained door access / security system for both offices. Maintained phone systems for both offices The Wickham office is on an Atligen Phone System. The Manufacturing facility has a newer Alcatel VoIP system. Created the IT Policies and Guidelines booklet. Implemented internal Instant Messaging system for users. Restructured the Active Directory organizational units to better match company structure and give more flexibility on group policies. Restructured internal company email and security groups to better match the company structure.

Sr. Linux / NT Systems Administrator

Optimi, Melbourne, FL November 2003 - June 2007

Agilent sold the Wizard product to Optimi in October 2003, in November I started doing contract IT work for the Wizard team and in April 2004 I was brought on as a full time employee. Using Linux (MNF), set up a firewall w/ DMZ for the Melbourne Office and the Atlanta office and configured, using IPSec, a corporate VPN. Configured the corporate active directory on Windows Server 2003 and moved email to groupware utilizing Exchange 2003 Enterprise Edition and setup secure Outlook web access with IIS and certificates over https for remote users unable to VPN in. Remotely set up their VPN and re-configured the IPSec tunnel so all offices communicate over a meshed VPN tunnel. Went to Malaga to integrate their network, migrating them to Optimi's Active Directory and Exchange environment from their existing AD/Exchange and configured https access to the web based Outlook for their office. Configured company wide Client/Server VPN access for remote users. Using Zabbix on Linux, set up monitoring of the Melbourne office’s network and servers. Deployed Symantec’s Corporate Anti Virus solution for server and desktop Antivirus and deployed Kaspersky Anti-Virus on the Exchange Servers. Configured Mail Relay Servers in the the main offices for special cases where email had to go out of Optimi a specific way. Upgraded our corporate firewalls to SonicWall 2040s and set up each office with dual ISP connections reconfiguring the Interoffice VPN to fail over between ISPs and load balancing outbound traffic. Created the appropriate MX records so that email could fail over to either the secondary link at an office or go through the other offices and que up should we lose all Internet connectivity at an office. Deployed Blackberry Enterprise Servers in the Atlanta and Malaga offices so Blackberry users could have access to Exchange. Deployed the HW & SW for the corporate ERP solution, using Navision on MS SQL in both our EU and US HQs using Citrix for client access. Routinely work with the software developers & QA team configuring test servers for various scenarios. Internally, the majority of the desktop systems are Windows XP with some Linux (Mandrake). Internal servers are a mix of Linux (Mandrake, SuSE, & Fedora), Windows Server 2000 & 2003, and Solaris.

Unix / NT Systems Analyst

CDI [contracted to Agilent Technologies], Melbourne Fl April 2002 - September 2003

Contract IT support for Agilent Technologies' Melbourne Office. Provide IT functions for the office, including frontline support, backup / restore, server administration, and workstation configuration. Workstations are primarily Windows 2000 and Windows XP with some HP-UX and Linux and the servers run Windows 2000 or Redhat Linux. I upgraded the workstations and laptops from Windows NT4 to Windows 2000. Worked with a local ISP to get iDSL installed to host a web based project for the engineers. Upgraded iDSL connection to a T1, to support multiple servers for multiple new projects. Helped the engineers build out Windows 2K & Redhat Linux servers for these projects. Installed and maintain an 802.11b WiFi accesspoint, setting up encryption keys and ESSID. Helped endusers create WiFi profiles for those that have WiFi at home and at the office.

Systems Administrator

ATI Reseach, Inc., Orlando, FL January 2001 - January 2002

System Administrator for ATI's Orlando office. Duties involved all aspects LAN / WAN services, including server and workstation configuration and maintenance, WAN maintenance, network backups of Unix and NT file servers and local Exchange server, server and workstation upgrades, resource planning and local user support. Local network consisted of Solaris 2.6, 7 and 8 servers, Windows NT4 file / print / domain and Exchange 5.5 servers, and Linux servers with Win9x, WinNT, Win2K, WinXP, and Linux clients. Shortly after starting, I modified the backup scheme to include daily, weekly, and montly backups of Unix & NT file severs utilizing ARCserve on NT. I upgraded the Solaris 2.6 "compute" server farm to Solaris 7. I stalled and maintained 802.11b wireless using Orinoco hardware, allowing laptop users to access the network through out the office. I also helped users configure home wireless systems and the wireless profiles on their laptops. I introduced linux to the office and configured test machines for engineers to use, which allowed the migration of some tools from NT and Solaris to Red Hat Linux, providing both a performance gain and cost savings. Configured VPN clients for users so they could access the network from home or on the road. WAN consisted of a T1 to Toronto main office and T1 to the internet, utilizing Cisco 2600s. All hardware interconnected using Foundry Workgroup Switches.

Maintained and planned a mixed network of Windows NT and Linux Servers for corporate Lan/Wan. Planned and deployed Lotus Domino utilizing Linux for the Server with WinNT and Web based clients. Migrated file server to Linux/Samba to free NT file server to act as a development server. Supported in-house users on WinNT Workstation and started migration to Windows 2K Professional. Supported eCalton clients with both client and server issues. Networked Houston office and configured Wan access to corporate Domino Server via IDSL and configured remote control access of Houston resources from corporate office.
