LITTLE EATON PRIMARY SCHOOL

ACADEMIC YEAR 2007/2008

The information in this booklet relates to the school year 2007/2008. Although, to the best of our knowledge, correct at the time of publication in July 2007, it should not be assumed that there will be no changes affecting this information before, during or after the year 2007/2008.

July 2007

Dear Parent

If your child is to join us for the first time, we welcome you as a parent and look forward to a happy and successful association over the coming years. If you already have (or have had) a child here, we are pleased to renew the links between us.

This school booklet provides information on the school, its aims, curriculum and activities.

Confidence in a school comes from you as a parent, knowing and understanding what goes on within it. We all hope that you will get to know what is happening at Little Eaton School through contact and discussion with myself and members of staff and take advantage of our parent consultation evenings. It is most important that mutual understanding and trust should be the basis of our shared responsibility.

The information in this handbook is correct at the time of publication and meets the requirements of the Education (School Information) Regulations of 1981. However, it cannot be assumed that there will be no changes in the arrangements before, during or after the particular academic year.

On the day of admission please complete the form at the back of this booklet and bring it to the school office together with your child’s birth certificate.

In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries or matters which you may wish to discuss.

Yours sincerely,

Phil Howard

THE SCHOOL

Little Eaton Primary School is a Group 2 County Primary Co-Educational Day School. The maximum number of pupils on roll in school during the summer term is around 250.

The Parish Rooms were the first school in the village. These were opened in the 1840’s for the children of the poor and labouring classes.

In 1872, the Boys School, costing £300, was opened on Barley Close (the old W.I. building – now two dwellings) and the Girls and Infants stayed in the Parish Rooms.

The school became “mixed” in 1884 on the present site and was a typical village school, admitting pupils from five to fourteen years old until just after the Second World War.

The original school building was greatly modernised in the mid 1980’s which included the addition of a kitchen, indoor toilets, the lowering of ceilings, the removal of wooden partitions in the hall and the provision of limited disabled access. There are also three temporary terrapin style classrooms on the site. The I.C.T. suite was opened in 2002 and our ‘state of the art’ R.KS1 facility was opened in November 2004.

Class organisation is based on one or two year age groups of mixed ability pupils. Mixed ability teaching allows teachers to respond to all children’s individual needs – whether it be supporting pupils with special educational needs or just stretching them to the very limit.

Pupils use the facilities of the village park for football, cricket, tennis, rounders, athletics and other sports.

ROLE OF SCHOOL GOVERNORS

Little Eaton Primary School has a group of fifteen governors who provide a local involvement in the school’s affairs. The governors direct and guide the school’s functioning and development and provide links with the Local Authority (L.A.), parents and local community.

The main function of the governors is to ensure that the school is being managed effectively within the set budget allocation. It is their responsibility to identify with the interests of those concerned with the school as present or future pupils, staff (teaching and non-teaching) parents and other members of the community. They are concerned with the organisation and curriculum of the school and the extent and use of resources made available to the school by the L.A..

ADMISSIONS

In deciding on admissions to all community and voluntary controlled schools in Derbyshire, the following order of priority will be adopted.

1. ‘Looked after’ children

2. Children living in the normal area* served by the school at the time of

application and admissions (including those living in another council’s

area).

3. Children not living in the normal area served by the school but who

have brothers or sisters attending the school at the time of their

admissions.

4. Other children whose parents have requested a place.

Where in the case of 3 and 4 above, choices have to be made between children satisfying the same criteria, those children living nearest to the school will be given preference.

* The area normally served by the school runs from Holbrook Crossing in the north to Ford Farm Mobile Home Park in the south, and from Bridge Inn Hill, Duffield, in the west to Drum Hill in the east. A map of this area is shown in Appendix 4.

If you are in any doubt, or would like further advice please contact the school office or Derbyshire Admissions on 08456 058 058.

LINKS

We believe that education is a continuous process and therefore it is essential that we develop strong links with our partners.

PRE-SCHOOL LINKS

We have strong links with the two playgroups in the village. We also make contact with other pre-school groups and nurseries that our reception pupils have previously attended.

There are no part-time admissions. Reception pupils commence full-time at the start of the Autumn and Spring Terms.

PRIMARY-SECONDARY LINKS

We have excellent relationships with partner primary and secondary schools. Staff have regular meetings and In-Service Training to develop good working practices.

All pupils living within the area normally served by The Ecclesbourne School usually transfer to that school at the end of Year 6. However those pupils who attend Little Eaton School and live outside this area generally do not get offered a place.

In any case, it is necessary for all parents to make an application for their child to attend a designated secondary school at the appropriate time during their child’s last year of primary school. The Local Education Authority (L.E.A.) will inform parents of arrangements and deadlines to be met.

COMMUNITY

We believe that developing children’s awareness and understanding of their local environment is essential. This is achieved through project and topic work and involvement with clubs and associations within the village and the wider community.

8

WHAT WE HOPE TO ACHIEVE AT SCHOOL

The curriculum is suited to the appropriate ages and needs of the pupils – with particular reference to the National Curriculum. It forms a progressive acquisition of academic and leisure skills to prepare each pupil for a successful and confident transfer into secondary education.

We can make no promises about progress but we hope that pupils will leave us with skills developed in literacy-the ability to read for pleasure, interest and information, to describe accurately in writing or conversation, to be able to find and apply information from non-fiction books and to be able to use initiative when attempting to solve problems. Pupils should be familiar with useful mathematical (numeracy) skills and have experience of computers, science, design and technology, geography, history, art, music, physical education (including games skills) and religious education. Homework is set on a class basis or for individual pupils as the need arises.

We encourage self-discipline and responsibility in each individual, as a member of a society based on respect for one another. We also aim to:

………………..provide an environment which fosters and encourages learning.

………………..encourage each individual to develop to his/her fullest potential.

………………..celebrate success and promote excellence.

………………..provide, through the curriculum, every opportunity for personal, social and academic development.

………………..ensure that all at Little Eaton Primary School enjoy the experience.

9

PARTNERSHIP

Little Eaton Primary School places a great importance on the relationships between home and school. Staff see the education of its young people as a three-way partnership, for the good of all pupils. These partners – the children, the parents and the school – all co-operate towards the same objective; that is to give all pupils the best possible opportunities for a successful education.

Staff welcome and value the participation of parents – whether it is helping in school and with visits, organising and assisting with extra-curricular activities, fundraising or supporting the Little Eaton School Association (L.E.S.A.). Perhaps most important of all, staff appreciate the help parents are able to give to their own children by taking an interest in their work and life in school.

Parents are encouraged to hear children read regularly at home and are asked to ensure all homework is completed on time. They are, in addition, asked to check that their children have the correct P.E. kit or any other equipment in school on the correct day. In this way, we are all able to work together for the benefit of all children.
