Character Development

During the Month of October we will focus on

Responsibility

This month students at Mechanicsville Elementary will be learning about the value of responsibility at home, at school, with friends, and in the community. A responsible person is someone who takes charge of himself or herself and accepts the consequences of his or her actions, decisions, and words. Being responsible allows us to move forward in life, taking credit for our success and acknowledging our mistakes so we may learn from them.

At home, you can help by giving your child specific responsibilities and discussing the importance of each family member pitching in to make the family unit run smoothly. Ask your child to think through the consequences of what would happen if no one did the laundry, took out the garbage, fixed meals, or earned money to pay the rent or mortgage.

Responsibilityis also the extension of respect. When we act responsibly, we are caring for others, paying attention to others, and responding to their needs. There are several ways to model responsible behavior: We must claim responsibility for our actions and choices, acknowledge and meet our obligations without being asked and consider the consequences for all people affected by our decisions.

“The ultimate responsibility always lies within you,

and opportunities are the ones you create.”

School Food Drive

In cooperation with the Maryland Food Bank, MES is holding a food drive from October 3rd – October 27th. A shopping cart will be in the front lobby and near the first grade classrooms. The most needed items include peanut butter, rice, macaroni and cheese, tuna fish, canned vegetables, and cereal. Please only donate non-perishable items. Students who choose to donate will be asked to place donations in the cart on the way into the building. At the end of each day, all donations will be weighed. The state of Maryland will award monetary prizes for the schools with the most donations by weight. In addition, students will receive a CARE ticket for each donation! All donated food will be placed into the MES food pantry and be available to any community member (adult or child) in need. In Maryland, 1 in 5 children struggle with food insecurity. Any donations that you can provide are greatly appreciated. Let’s fight to end hunger together!
