WARNING: THERE IS AN IMPORTANT REASON WHY THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE DESIGNED IN THE MANNER LISTED BELOW. PLEASE FOLLOW THEM EXACTLY BEING SURE TO MAKE NO ADJUSTMENTS ON YOUR OWN. THOSE WHO FAIL TO FINISH ALL OF THE PREP BECAUSE THEIR STOOL SEEMS CLEAR OR DO NOT SPLIT THE PREP THE EVENING BEFORE, AND 5 HOURS PRIOR TO THE APPOINTMENT TIME, ARE NOT ADEQUATELY PREPPED AND THEREFORE MAY NOT GET THE BEST POSSIBLE EXAMINATION OF THEIR COLON.

You MUST arrange a ride for the day of your exam (NOT A TAXI). If not, your procedure will be rescheduled.

If you must cancel or reschedule your appointment, please call the office at (703) 435-3366 at least 5 business days before your scheduled date to avoid a cancellation fee.

If you have a history of moderate constipation, or have had prior issues with poor bowel prep results in the past, call the office 1week prior to your appointment for additional instructions to ensure your prep will be adequate.

ITEMS YOU WILL NEED FOR YOUR PREP:

The EASY 2 GO PREP KIT that you purchased from our office.

64 ounces of clear liquid. Any type of Gatorade, Powerade, Crystal Light, or Flavored Smart Water are acceptable. Consider purchasing 32 oz of 2 different flavors. The prep will taste like the flavor you choose so choose flavors you like.

IF YOU HAVE CONSTIPATION, purchase Miralax or generic polyethylene glycol (119 Grams) which is available over-the-counter in most pharmacies.

7 DAYS BEFORE YOUR COLONOSCOPY:

CONTINUE aspirin, if you take it, unless otherwise instructed by your physician.

STOP NSAIDS such as Advil, Motrin, Celebrex, Aleve,or Ibuprofen.

STOP Vitamin E, fish oil, Omega 3 and Iron (including multivitamins with iron).

ASK your prescribing physician for specific instructions if you take a prescription blood thinner such as Plavix, Pradaxa, Clopidogrel, Coumadin, Wafarin, Effient, Eliquis or Lovenox. If you are advised to continue this blood thinning medication, call our office 1 week prior to your exam.

DIABETICS may continue oral medications prior to the procedure but must hold them the day of the procedure (until after the exam is completed) unless directed otherwise.

INSULIN-DEPENDENT diabetics should contact their internist or endocrinologist as insulin doses may need to be adjusted.

IF YOU HAVE CONSTIPATION: start taking 1 capful (17 grams) of MIRALAX daily up to, and including, the day before your exam.

5 DAYS BEFORE YOUR COLONOSCOPY:

BEGIN A LOW FIBER/LOW RESIDUE DIET:NO nuts, seeds, popcorn, skins from fruits/veggie (ie apples, potatoes),fruits with seeds, raw vegetables, whole grains/breads with seeds and NO corn. Stop all fiber supplements.

1 DAY BEFORE YOUR COLONOSCOPY

Upon waking in the morning, mix the large bottle of Polyethylene Glycol (white bottle with purple cap) with 64 oz. of the clear liquid of your choice and refrigerate.

You may eatupto 2-3 eggs and 2-4 strips of bacon/turkey bacon finishing by 9 A.M. You may also have 1-2small yogurts (without fruit) at 12 noon (no substitutions)

YOU MAY NOT EAT ANYTHING AFTER 12 NOON.

Begin drinking clear liquids at 12 noon.

Jell-O, popsicles, hard candy (NO Red or Purple)

Be sure to have at least 8-10 glasses of water or other clear liquid throughout the day to avoid dehydration.

AT 2 PM, take 2 BisacodylTablets (brown pouch). May be taken at work.

AT 5-6 PM, begin to drink the first 32 oz. of the Polyethylene Glycol that was previously mixed with the clear liquid. Drink 8 oz. of this solution every 15-20 minutes.

  • If you feel nauseous, you can take longer breaks between each glass
  • Drinking through a straw and adding ice may also help with nausea

AT 8 PM,you will either take the packet of Magnesium Citrate or Bottle of Magnesium Citrate which was provided in your prep Kit. (NOT BOTH.)

  • If the packet was provided,mix the Magnesium Citrate (red pouch) with 10 oz. offlavored clear liquid of your choice atroom temperature. Mix thoroughly, then add ice and drink immediately.
  • If bottle of Magnesium citrate was provided, add to ice and drink the entire bottle

AT 9 PM, take 2 Bisacodyl tablets (brown pouch) and Simethicone tablet (yellow pouch) with water.

THE DAY OF YOUR COLONOSCOPY

You may drink small quantities of black coffee or tea (no sugar, milk or cream) and water up to 4 HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR PROCEDURE TIME

You may take any blood pressure, heart or thyroid medications you normally take in the morning with a few sips of water only.

5 HOURS before your scheduled procedure time, you will drink the remaining 32 oz. of the previously mixed and refrigerated Polyethylene Glycol and clear liquid solution. Drink 8 oz. of this solution every 15 minutes until the solution is consumed.

4 HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR SCHEDULED PROCEDURE TIME, STOP DRINKING LIQUIDS (NO GUM, NO HARD CANDY).

You are now ready for the exam if you followed ALL of the instructions and your stool is no longer formed, but a clear or yellow liquid.
