THE HOLY SCRIPTURES

OLD TESTAMENT: (Isaiah 45: 1-7)

Cyrus, God's Instrument

45Thus says theLordtohis anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped,to subdue nations before himandto loose the belts of kings,to open doors before himthat gates may not be closed:2“I will go before youandlevel the exalted places,[a]I will break in pieces the doors of bronzeand cut through the bars of iron,
3I will give you the treasures of darknesand the hoards in secret places, that you may know that it is I, theLord, the God of Israel, who call you by your name.4For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen,I call you by your name,I name you, though you do not know me.5I am theLord, and there is no other, besides me there is no God;I equip you, though you do not know me,6that people may know, from the rising of the sunand from the west, that there is none besides me;I am theLord, and there is no other.7I form light and create darkness;I make well-being andcreate calamity;I am theLord, who does all these things.

Greeting

1Paul,Silvanus, and Timothy,To the church of theThessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

Grace to you and peace. The Thessalonians' Faith and Example

2We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly[a]mentioning you in our prayers,3remembering beforeour God and Fatheryour work of faith and labor oflove andsteadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.4For we know, brothers[b]loved by God,that he has chosen you,5becauseour gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power andin the Holy Spirit and with fullconviction. You knowwhat kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.6Andyou became imitators of usand of the Lord, foryou received the word in much affliction, with thejoy of the Holy Spirit,7so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia.8For not only has the word of the Lordsounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone fortheverywhere, so that we need not say anything.9For they themselves report concerning us the kind ofreception we had among you, and howyou turned to Godfrom idols to serve the living andtrue God,10andto wait for his Sonfrom heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesuswho delivers us fromthe wrath to come.

Paying Taxes to Caesar

15Then the Pharisees went and plotted howto entangle him in his words.16And they senttheir disciples to him, along withthe Herodians, saying, “Teacher,we know that you are true and teachthe way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, foryou are not swayed by appearances.[a]17Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to paytaxes toCaesar, or not?”18But Jesus, aware of their malice, said,“Whyput me to the test, you hypocrites?19Show me the coin for the tax.”And they brought him a denarius.[b]20And Jesus said to them,“Whose likeness and inscription is this?”21They said, “Caesar's.” Then he said to them,“Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.”22When they heard it, they marveled. And theyleft him and went away.

Proper Preface

It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. Grant us Your Spirit, gracious Father, that we may give heed to the testament of Your Son in true faith and, above all, firmly take to heart the words with which Christ gives to us His body and blood for our forgiveness. By Your grace, lead us to remember and give thanks for the boundless love which He manifested to us when, by pouring out His precious blood, He saved us from Your righteous wrath and from sin, death and hell. Grant that we may receive the bread and wine, that is, His body and blood, as a gift, guarantee, and pledge of His salvation. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

CONG: Amen.
