University Statement:

Coastal Carolina University is an academic community that expects the highest standards of honesty, integrity, and personal responsibility. Members of this community are ac- countable for their actions and are committed to creating an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust.

Course Description:

Fundamentals of Art II is a comprehensive overview of the elements and principles of three-dimensional design. Students will address various construction techniques, be challenged to solve complex creative problems, as well as develop their ideas from initial sketch to execution. Students will also be challenged to think conceptually exploring form, content, and meaning in their works

This foundations course promotes the discovery and understanding of the third dimension through the manipulation of materials. Students develop creative problem solving abilities by conducting research, gen- erating ideas, developing working drawings and plans, and construct- ing three-dimensional objects. This course advances visual sensitivity, accurate analysis of process, and a basic proficiency in the processes of carving, modeling, and assemblage.

Course Instructional Objectives:

Students will: • Develop an analytical approach to design and gain the ability to com-

municate ideas clearly and correctly both visually and verbally using

the vocabulary of 3-D design. • Engage in critical thinking and aesthetic reasoning in one-on-one

discussion and class critiques. • Explore three-dimensional design in an arena dedicated to crafts-

manship in the manipulation of diverse materials. • Explore the basic art components of subject and content, and the

elements and principles of design. • Design with various tools and materials while demonstrating good

health and safety practices. • Exercise fundamental design skills and techniques that form a strong

foundation for self-expression and further art making.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Projects will be assessed during Sophomore Review (ARTS 297) for skill level and the qualities described below in each bulleted point. Students will:

•  Articulate form and space through 3-D compositions (in the round).

•  Explore elements through focused 3-D studies of line, form, space, and plane.

•  Demonstrate the use of multiple materials, methods, and sculptural processes (including additive, subtractive, and manipulation).

•  Keep all coursework in an exhibition-ready state (or well documented through digital imagery); professional care taking, craftsmanship, and labeling of completed projects is expected.

•  Demonstrate personal and creative engagement in solutions to 3-D assignments.

Grading Scale A 90-100 B+ 88-89 B 80-87

•  All work is due on the date and time specified. If a student is not going to be in class the day an assignment is due they must turn it in ahead of time to the professor, or their mailbox in the department of- fice. Students will receive one grade letter reduction per class meet- ing for work that is handed in beyond the due date. Assignments/ projects turned in one week or more beyond the due date will auto- matically receive a 0.

•  There will be FOUR projects. Each project will involve different tech- niques & materials. Projects are due at the beginning of class on the assigned date for critique (even if you are absent), and work will be considered late otherwise. LATE WORK will result in a lower grade.

•  GRADING RUBRIC FOR EACH PROJECT Each project will be assessed by the student’s:

· Comprehension/Understanding

· Creative Approach/Problem Solving

· Effort

· Composition

· Craftsmanship

•  “DO-OVER” POLICY There will be times when working with new materials that you will be unsatisfied with your results. You may rework/redo any two projects in an effort to improve your grade. The initial grade and a new grade for resubmitted work will be averaged together for a final grade. If the previous work was turned late or you missed critique you are not eligible for this resubmission. All resubmissions are due on the last day of class (before exams).

•  CRITIQUES A critique of completed work will accompany each due date. Critiques are an important opportunity to exchange ideas and thoughts about your work as well as the work of your classmates. Come to critiques prepared to participate. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY on critique days and PARTICIPATION IS REQUIRED! Communication Policy: I make every effort to be available to my students. If you are unable to make these times please email me to set up an appointment. I will also work to return all emails within 48 hours. If you have not received a response in that time frame then assume that I have not received the message and resend.

Attendance Policy:

Students are required to attend each studio session for the entire class period. Three unexcused absences are the maximum without penalty. After the 4th absence the student’s final grade will be reduced by a full letter grade. After the 5th unexcused absence the student’s final grade will be reduced another full letter grade. After the 6th unexcused ab- sence the student will automatically fail the course. Any tardiness, arriv- ing late, leaving class early, or excessive break time will count as a 1/2 unexcused absence.
