WHAT DOES THE SUBJECT INCLUDE?

The Diploma will provide you with the opportunity to build on knowledge obtained from level 2 studies and further enhance your knowledge and understanding in the world of outdoor activities. Practical sessions form an important aspect of the course enabling you to develop skills that are needed to perform outdoor techniques and accurately navigate yourself to certain points in the outdoors. Theory sessions help with underpinning knowledge related to the work that is done in practical sessions.

WHAT IS THE STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE?

The course is made up of 180 credits over 2 years, with units being valued at either 5 or 10 credits. Each of which is assessed by a range of methods including written assessments, role play, presentations and practical activities.

IS THIS COURSE FOR ME?

If you have an interest in outdoor adventure activities and are hoping to pursue a career in one of the many sport, leisure, outdoor instructor or recreation related areas then this is the course for you.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

5 GCSE’s at C grade (or at levels 4-9 on new GCSE grading framework) or a Level 2 Sports qualification at pass grade. Students are required to be self-motivated, disciplined and to take a degree of responsibility for their own learning.

Delivery of this course incorporates both theoretical and practical elements. Student participation is valued and essential in all practical units. Learners will have the opportunity to gain a range of additional qualifications in the field of sport and exercise, such as first aid, sports leader’s awards and National Governing Body coaching certificates. Some of these qualifications may incur costs but these will be kept to a minimum.

HOW MANY HOURS, WEEKS, YEARS DOES IT LAST?

The full programme consists of 13 hours of core lessons with 1 hour of group or individual tutorials per week. In addition to this you will be expected to use some of your own time for conducting research and assignment work in allocated independent learning slots.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING WITH ME?

Learners will need to be prepared with writing materials, ring binders to keep work together and outdoor kit for practical sessions that will take in water and land.

HOW CAN I PREPARE MYSELF BEFORE THE COURSE BEGINS?

Sports kit with college logo will be required. It is available online at fortis sports. Search for North Shropshire College when on website and then select the required kit. It is recommended that students purchase two polo shirts, a couple of tee-shirts for practical lessons and a hooded top or sweat top. Rain jackets are also highly advisable for this course. Various excursions are organised throughout the year as part of the core course content and to enhance the student’s overall experience at college with costs being kept to a minimum.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

Successful completion provides the opportunity to gain the equivalent of 3 A-Levels which can lead students onto Higher Education (University) or employment in an outdoor adventure establishment or within the Sport, Leisure and Recreation sectors.

ARE THERE ANY EXTRA COSTS?

All sports students not doing a scholarship are required to pay a compulsory £30 for an additional Sports Leaders qualification. On enrolment students are asked to make a contribution of £25 towards the compulsory induction trip which contains exciting activities in a nearby city. Scholarship students will contribute towards their kit and fitness/club fees.

HOW DO I APPLY/JOIN THIS COURSE?

You first need to complete an application form. You can find forms at any of the college campuses or alternatively you can complete the form on-line by visiting the College’s website .

Once we have your form we will invite you to come into College and meet with a member of our teaching Team so you can ask any other questions you have. Usually at this meeting we will either offer you a place on the course you have applied for or, in some cases an alternative course.
