Position Description

Position Title: / Respite Support Worker / Trip Leader - DisAbility Services

Key Summary of Functions:
The DisAbility Team provide a range of support services including respite care for children and adults with a disability and their carers.
This position is responsible for working with clients requiring support to integrate into mainstream community programs/services and general respite. Members of the DisAbility Team will work in a way that promotes human dignity and creates conditions for social justice and equity.
The successful applicant will have the capacity to work as a Respite Support Worker and / or Trip Leader as required.

Key Duties:

Respite Support Worker

  • Encourage and support children, young people and adults with a disability to participate in the program
  • Actively implement policies and procedures relevant to the Respite Activity Program
  • Initiate and provide support and assistance to all team members to ensure the effective and efficient implementation of the program
  • Liaise with families at the beginning and end of each activity
  • Undertake activity responsibility for medications, finances, incidents and reporting as required
  • To support integration of individuals with a disability into mainstream community programs, child/day care centers and school holiday activities.
  • To provide respite support through community based activities (Day and overnight camps).
  • To work as an effective team member.
  • To work collaboratively with management of mainstream settings, and families of individuals with a disability to ensure best practice outcomes for all.
  • To maintain relevant certificates and engage in training to meet ongoing professional development and program requirements.
  • To meet families, collect medication and medication booklets at beginning of activity as directed by the Trip Leader.
  • Identify needs of participants and be able to work to provide positive outcomes for those participants that are involved in the DisAbility Services programs.
  • To be involved in personal care duties such as toileting, showering, dressing and feeding.
  • To work in a manner to ensure a safe and meaningful respite/integration experience to all participants, using the Active Service Model approach.
  • To provide feedback to service providers and care coordinator about activity.

Trip Leader

  • To coordinate and take responsibility for the day to day running of the Day activities and overnight Camps.
  • To meet and greet families, collect medication and medication booklets at beginning of activity.
  • Administer medication in accordance with Agency procedures.
  • To provide direction, support and hands-on assist to the Assistant Trip Leaders/respite support workers and volunteers.
  • To provide ongoing supervision and hands-on training to respite support workers and volunteers on the camp/day activity.
  • Identify needs of participants and be able to work as a team to provide positive outcomes for those participants that are involved in the DisAbility Services programs.
  • To work in a manner that promotes Active Service Model and consumer directed care.
  • To read and disseminate client information to Assistant Trip Leaders/Respite Support workers and volunteers.
  • To be involved in personal care duties such as toileting, showering, dressing and feeding.
  • To work with the Assistant Trip Leader/Respite support workers to allocate roles and responsibilities to ensure a safe and meaningful respite experiences to all participants.
  • To provide feedback to parents, and camp coordinator about activity.
  • To coordinate the buddy system so that the safety and wellbeing of both the participants and the volunteers are considered.

Agency

  • Ensure all administrative and reporting requirements of the program are completed and submitted to the relevant organisations within the appropriate timeframe
  • Use principles of best practice to provide an innovative and responsive program.
  • Maintain current and accurate case notes, records and statistical information.
  • Staff are responsible for upholding consumer rights, privacy, confidentiality and informed consent.
  • All UCG staff are responsible for identifying, monitoring, resolving and reviewing OH&S and risk management issues.
  • Undertake review and evaluation of program and professional practice.
  • Comply with organisational effectiveness strategies of UnitingCareGippsland, including development of quality plans, personal objectives and training plans.
  • Respect the diverse needs of all community groups and individuals to ensure that their needs are met in an inclusive and sensitive manner.
  • Participate in agency quality accreditation processes.
  • Conform to and apply relevant requirements of the Law within the workplace.
  • Report and participate in any investigation of any incident or occurrence that may constitute a breach of any legal requirement.
  • Other duties as directed.

Key Selection Criteria

Mandatory:

  1. Satisfactory National police check, Working with Children Check and Victorian Drives License.
  2. Disability/ Community relevant qualifications (minimum Certificate IV). First Aid Certificate Level 2 also required
  3. Demonstrated ability to use computers efficiently including Word and Outlook.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work within the vision, mission, policies and principles of the organisation.

Position:

  1. Demonstrated capacity to work as a member of a team.
  2. Ability to develop creative solutions to issues that arise within the community or workplace, particularly relating to offsite activities.
  3. Flexibility regarding working hours, including weekend and overnight work
  4. Demonstrated ability to relate positively to a large range of people from diverse backgrounds, particularly people with disabilities.
  5. Sound interpersonal, problem solving, negotiation and organisational skills

Desirable:

  1. Experience working with people with a disability within a group setting or one to one support.
