Position: JSY at the Market Volunteer

Start Date: Thursday, June 1st

What is JSY at the Market?

Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables (JSY) is a free SNAP Nutrition Education program targeted at audiences with limited resources. The aim of the program is to help individuals and families eat healthy, make the most of their food budgets, prepare foods safely, and adopt a healthier lifestyle overall. JSY is a series of workshops that provide nutrition education and cooking demonstrations in fun and interactive way to motivate clients to choose healthy foods as well as offer inspiring ways to prepare fruits and vegetables!

GENERAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Foodlink and the Friends of the Rochester Public Market are seeking a volunteer to assist the JSY at the Market Educator. Foodlink’s JSY educator leads the nutrition workshops and cooking demonstrations, and the duties of the volunteer include but are not limited to:

•  Assisting the JSY Educator in preparing nutrition workshops at the market

•  Promoting the program to market shoppers, following the curriculum, and ensuring integrity of programming

•  Handing out samples, recipes and nutrition education materials

•  Assisting with shopping, cleaning, and soliciting participants

•  Assisting with setup and cleanup including the tent, table, chairs, cooking equipment, and educational materials

•  Maintaining all sanitary and food safety protocols

The program will run every Thursday and Saturday 8am - 2pm from June through October 2017, and the volunteer will report to Foodlink’s JSY Educator. Volunteer training is scheduled for Thursday, May 18th and Thursday, May 25th.

REQUIREMENTS:

•  Dynamic personality and excellent presentation, interpersonal and communications skills

•  Willing and able to travel to the Rochester Public Market

•  Willing and able to stand for long periods of time and work outside in inclement weather

•  Willing and able to lift 25 pounds

•  ServSafe certification or successful completion of a Food Safety course (provided by Foodlink)

•  Basic knife skills and ability to execute basic cooking techniques

•  Knowledge about regional produce

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

•  Experience working in multicultural settings with diverse populations

•  Experience or training in nutrition or culinary arts

•  Experience implementing cooking demonstrations

•  Knowledge about community food security issues in the City of Rochester

•  Farmers market knowledge and formal experience in food service
