NOTES FROM THE MEETING

Agenda

Attendees: Tammy Jones, CC Hoy, Hannah Scott, Amy Smith, Harry Rider, Alondra Fioriti, Andrew Bauer, Julie Blanton, Dan Remley, Ralph Douthitt, Krista Hayslip, Jeff Fisher, Dirk Dempsey, and Judy Dixon.

Hannah Scott gave a presentation on “Formalizing the Coalition”. She provided the group with several options. There were questions and discussion about whether it was necessary to be formalized at this point. A consensus was reached that we should proceed without going through this process. It was discussed that we could work as an “informal committee” in order to get things going in the county.

From the discussion, we were directed to identify a purpose.

Purpose: To provide education and awareness of local foods in Pike County

The group also discussed the idea of acquiring data to identify gaps in our current system.

No official name was decided upon at this meeting.

Subcommittees

Everyone in attendance selected a subcommittee that interested them. We broke into these groups and discussed what each subcommittee would begin to work on as an action item/next step. At the conclusion of the meeting, each group reported to the entire group with this information :

Food Insecurity: (Dan, Judy, Alondra, Andrew)

-network with local schools, healthcare providers, senior centerabout what kind of food help does

the community need, why they have those needs and what we may be able to do to meet those

needs

……one way to meet this goal is to talk with CAC of Pike County about sharing the results of the

questionnaire they are doing

-network other available resources

…….attend the Town Meetings being set up by CAC in different areas in the county to

learn what is needed

…….meet with Local Stores and farmers on how to meet these needs

-how can we “push/promote” foods that are not being used at food pantries/giveaways

..…..provide recipes/food demonstrations

…….tell stories about where the food comes from

-work with education group to keep ingredient list simple on recipes to be shared

-mass food distribution - would need a freezer, refrigerators, and storage

…….need people to work not only handing out food but getting the food to the place of

distribution

…….place to have the distribution where large mass of people can be helped

…….how to get food for people with special food diets example: low sodium or diabetes.

-how to access local foods

-how farmers get approval to accept EBT cards

-what are farmer’s market vouchers and how are they used?

-how to use EBT cards at farmer’s markets

-how to prepare local fresh foods

Pop-Up Farmers’ Markets: (Tammy, Jeff, Ralph, Dirk)

-identify 4 locations in the county outside of Waverly

…….Beaver, Latham area, Piketon, Stockdale

-make contacts to secure site in each location

-investigate bylaws used by other farmers’ markets

-identify and invite local growers to set-up at our Pop-Up markets

-advertise day/time of each Pop-Up…..newspaper, radio, social media, signs at location

-work with education subcommittee to get EBT card reader for growers and educate SNAP

recipients

Action Items:

What can we do? Identify action items that could be undertaken in the next 30 days:

  1. Tammy will make contacts for possible Pop-Up sites in the county.
  2. Jeff and Ralph will look for sample farmers’ market bylaws.
  3. Julie is working on the question of how farmers get approval for to accept EBT.
  4. Amy Smith will help us on the farmers’ market vouchers that are provided new mothers and their children.
  5. CC will get sources of recipes to help identify ways to prepare fresh produce.
