Overview

The GHS Hazard Communication Standard specifies how chemicals shall be identified, the process of classification, and then what information shall be provided to employees through the use of signal words, hazard statements, labels, and SDS. This module provides an overview of the process of hazard identification and classification that is performed by manufacturers and importers of hazardous chemicals. This overview’s scope is for providing employers with the information needed in order to understand the general processes and information available.

Lesson Objectives

Upon completion of this topic students should be able to:

1.  Understand the general process of classification performed by manufacturers and importers.

2.  Be aware of the resources provided for the process in the appendixes of the GHS Hazard Communication Standard.

3.  Determine the proper signal word, hazard statement, pictogram, and precautionary statement.
