Extra credit for Unit 4 test

Due Wednesday April 11th. Last day to submit: Monday April 16th.

WebQuest on energy resources

Introduction

It is the year 2030 and your city is running out of coal to make electricity from.Your energy resource company is one the companies that been chosen by the mayor to serve ontheir Energy Council. The hopes are to find the best alternative resource for electricity for your city. You will be gathering information necessary to create a presentation for the mayor in order to convince him of your alternative energy type. You will also complete a briefing, the mayor can read that will help him understand your presentation.

Task

Your tasks will be to gather information on renewable and nonrenewable energy resources and pick a nonrenewable resource for a formal powerpoint presentation to the mayor to help him determine what renewable energy resource the city will go with using your research from task 1 and 2. You will then complete the Mayor’s energy briefing from task 3.

Process

Key Points: Presentaion will have research on coal and one renewable energy resource of your choosing. You will complete the energy briefing below. The city will be the one that you had chosen for the individual/group research papers.Submit powerpoint and briefing via google sites; see due and last day to submit dates.

TASK 1:

Energy Sources (coal and one chosen nonrenewable):______

Your city:______

1. Explain in detail how each energy source works.

2. What types of energy are present in each energy source?

3. Draw an energy diagram for both sources, starting with the sun and ending with the electricity going into your house.

4. List the 3 most important advantages of each energy source.

5. List the 3 most important disadvantages ofeach energy source.

6. List 3 interesting or important facts about each energy source.

7.which energy source is renewable which is non-renewable? Explain.

Task 2 EVALUATE:

Use 5 descriptive words to explain your community, ex. rural, earth-conscience, wealthy, etc.

8. Write a small description explaining your community's geographical location and weather. ex. I live in a large city on the east coast. We get rain about twice a week, and it's usually partly sunny and very windy.

9. Are the resources available in your community for your energy source to work? If not, could you easily get those resources and how?

10. Thinking about the attitude of your community, do you feel your community would acceptthis type of energy source? If you get stuck lookback at your advantages and disadvantages.

11. Do you think this energy source would work in your community? Why or why not? Be very specific, giving examples from above.

TASK 3 Briefing:

Complete the MAYOR Energy Briefing.During translation, some of the descriptions have become incomplete. There is valuable information and resources included in the briefing that will be needed for the remaining activities.

MAYOR ENERGY BRIEFING

A ______resource has been identified as any natural substance or energy that living things use. These resources may either be ______or non______.Renewable resources can be ______. Examples are ______.A nonrenewable resource cannot be ______. Examples of nonrenewable resources are ______.When all of these resources are used, they ______be replaced.

A large example of nonrenewable resources are fossil fuels. Fossil fuels form over ______of years and are from the remains of ______organisms.A liquid fossil fuel is ______, used for______. A solid fossil fuel is ______, used for ______.A gaseous fossil fuel is ______, used for______. Seven forms of alternative resources are ______, ______, ______, ______, ______, ______and ______.Our world depends on fossil fuel because______. The state needs to lower the dependence on fossil fuels because______.As of now, there is a debate between scientists as to when we will run out of fossil fuels. Some scientists suggest that at the rate we are going now, 80% of the world's oil supply will be used up by 2030.At any rate, ______resources will need to be used in the future.

A question brought up about how people impact energy resources. We feel the largest harmful human impact on energy resources is ______while the most helpful is ______.Research states that people impact energy resources in a harmful manner by______. Some helpful impacts being made are ______.Bill Clinton suggests that some things the government could do for clean energy include: ______
