Pumping Apparatus Driver/Operator (1st Edition)
Chapter 7 Terms
Fire Hose Nozzles & Flow Rates

Adjustable Flow Nozzle
Nozzle designed so that the amount of water flowing through the nozzle can be increased or decreased at the nozzle.

Applicator Pipe
Curved pipe attached to a nozzle for precisely applying water over a burning object.

Automatic Nozzle
Fog stream nozzle that automatically corrects itself to provide a good stream at the proper nozzle pressure.

Combination Nozzle
Nozzle designed to provide a straight stream and a fog stream.

Constant Pressure Relay
Method of establishing a relay water supply utilizing two or more pumpers to supply the attack pumper. This method reduces the need for time-consuming and often confusing fireground calculations of friction loss.

Distributor Nozzle
Nozzle used to create a broken stream that is usually used on basement fires.

Elevated Master Stream
Fire stream in excess of 350 gpm that is deployed from the tip of an aerial device.

Fire Stream
Stream of water or other water-based extinguishing agent after it leaves the fire hose and nozzle until it reaches the desired point.

Front Bumper Well
Hose or tool compartment built into the front bumper of a fire apparatus.

Handline
Small hoselines (2 1/2inch or less) that can be handled and maneuvered without mechanical assistance.

High Pressure Fog
Fog stream operated at high pressures and discharged through small diameter hose.

High Pressure Nozzle
Fire stream nozzle that is designed to be operated in excess of the 100 psi to which ordinary fog nozzles are designed.

Impinging Stream Nozzle
Nozzle that drives several jets of water together at a set angle in order to break water into finely divided particles.

Master Stream
Any of a variety of heavy, large-caliber water streams; usually supplied by siamesing two or more hoselines into a manifold device delivering 350 gpm or more. Synonymous with Heavy Stream.

Master Stream Nozzle
Nozzle capable of flowing in excess of 350 gpm.

Monitor
Master stream appliance whose stream direction can be changed while water is being discharged. They can be fixed, portable, or a combination.

Mystery Nozzle
Older style variable gallonage adjustable fog stream nozzle.

Nozzle
Appliance on the discharge end of a hoseline that forms a fire stream of definite shape, volume, and direction.

Piercing Nozzle
Nozzle with an angled, case-hardened steel tip that can be driven through a wall, roof, or ceiling to extinguish hidden fire. Synonymous with Puncture Nozzle.

Preconnect
(1) Attack hose connected to a discharge when the hose is loaded; this shortens the time it takes to deploy the hose for fire fighting. (2) Soft intake hose that is carried connected to the pump intake.

Shutoff Nozzle
Type of nozzle that has a valve or other device for controlling the water supply. Firefighters use it to control water supply at the nozzle rather than at the source of supply.

Turret Pipe
Large master stream appliance mounted on a pumper or trailer and connected directly to a pump. Synonymous with Deck Gun or Deck Pipe.

Water Curtain
Fan-shaped stream of water applied between a fire and an exposed surface to prevent the surface from igniting from radiated heat.
