Maritime Programs Manager

This full-time position reports to the Senior Director of Interpretation. Salary is commensurate with experience plus excellent benefits. Fort Ticonderoga is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

I. A. Primary Purpose of Organization:

Fort Ticonderoga is comprised of 2,000 acres and includes the reconstructed Fort, the Carillon Battlefield, the Pavilion and the King’s Garden, Mount Defiance, Mount Independence, Native American historic sites and numerous other historic features that span the property’s history.

Current staffing includes 17 full-time employees and approximately 80 temporary employees. Fort Ticonderoga annually serves more than 70,000 visitors.

Fort Ticonderoga is a private non-profit institution open to the public since 1909.

B.  Primary Purpose of Position:

The Maritime Programs Manager coordinates all aspects of Fort Ticonderoga’s maritime programs on Lake Champlain, including tours, charters, docking, licensing, safety, and vessel maintenance. The Maritime Programs Manager will oversee and operate the 60-foot vessel Carillon, touring visitors along the historic waterways of Lake Champlain surrounding Fort Ticonderoga. The Maritime Programs Manager is responsible for ensuring an educational, enjoyable, and safe experience to all guests on board the Carillon. Working under the Senior Director of Interpretation, the Maritime Programs Manager will plan out the measured, sustainable growth of maritime programs to include period boats, water taxi transportation, naval living history events, and period boat construction. The Maritime Programs Manager will hire, train, supervise, and develop seasonal maritime crew to smoothly conduct current tour and charter operations and grow towards future goals.

C. Knowledge, Skills and Ability

Candidate must have an in-depth understanding of vessel operations and mechanical systems on a variety of makes of boats, from modern epoxy/fiberglass to period timber framing as well as engine, electrical, and communication systems. Candidate must have a working knowledge of all applicable Coast Guard, EPA and State regulations with regard to safe & legal maritime operations. Candidate must have project management experience related to maritime licensing and infrastructure. Candidate must possess strong problems solving skills, working with other members of Fort Ticonderoga’s senior leadership to achieve broader site goals. As a full-time manger, a candidate for this position must have the requisite skill of all management at Fort Ticonderoga; the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; the ability to interpret policies, rules and procedures; the ability to analyze problems and offer solutions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and volunteers; contribute significantly to the Fort’s strong and enthusiastic senior team; and have the ability to give directions/instructions. Candidate must possess the ability to manage several tasks simultaneously and must exercise tact and judgment in all situations. Initiative is required and the candidate must work independently as well as be an effective team member. Excellent written and public communication skills are essential. Accuracy is extremely important. Skill in using a personal computer (including Word, Publisher, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) is necessary. They must present a professional image with regards to Fort Ticonderoga in all media. A proven track record in the management of crews and staff is a key requirement. Candidate must be enthusiastic and energetic with strong background and passion for maritime history and education. High standards of authenticity and commitment to excellence are expected. Outstanding professional demeanor, energy level, and work ethic are necessary.

D.  Work Schedule:

The normal working hours for this position will be determined with weekend; evening and holiday work may be required on a scheduled basis. Some overnight travel and supervisory responsibilities will be required

E.  Qualifications:

Must hold a US Coast Guard Master License for Inland Waterways on Passenger Vessels up to 50 Gross Tons.

Must have Transportation Worker Identification Credentials (TWIC).

Must have FCC Marine Radio Operator Permit (MROP).

Must have 5 years prior experience with 60-foot long passenger vessels or similar craft

Must have previous tour guide or guest service experience
