Organisation Context

Primary Health Networks are primary health care organisations working to coordinate primary health care delivery and tackle local health care needs and service gaps. They will work with general practice; allied health and community health care providers to drive improvements and greater integration in primary health care and ensure that services are better tailored to meet the needs of local communities.

The Gippsland Primary Health Network (GPHN) plays an integral role in the delivery of a number of primary and mental health programs.

Role Overview

A strategic priority of GPHN Business Plan is ‘to influence clinical standards of general practitioners; practice nurses and other health professionals. To improve access to quality; best practice education and professional development for general practice and other primary health workforce’

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the means by which people maintain their knowledge and skills related to their professional lives. CPD obligations are common for most professions; it is a structured approach to learning to help ensure competence of practice; taking in knowledge; skills and practical experience.

Health professionals and other people working in Gippsland’s general practices seek training and education opportunities to maintain professional standards; influence clinical practice and develop skills and expertise.

Gippsland PHN’s CPD program offers a variety of events in various formats targeting GPs; other medical professionals; nurses working in general practice and other health settingsand practice managers and administration personal.

Speakers and topics comply with CPD standards set by respective health professionals governing bodies such as the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM); Nursing and Midwifery Board; Australian Practice Manager Association (APMA).

The role of the CPD GP Advisor is to provide advice and expertise regarding GPHN’s CPD activities designed for GPs including the development of learning outcomes and course content for RACGP and ACRRM accredited activities.

Position Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide the GP perspective on the direction of the GPHN Education and Training Program;
  • Make suggestions of suitable topics and speakers across the range of areas relevant to general practice;
  • Provide comment on the suitability and relevance of proposed education events;
  • Provide oversight into the development phase of planned education events; particularly in relation to the applications to RACGP and ACRRM for accreditation which includes the development of learning outcomes and course content;
  • Seek input and feedback from general practice colleagues;

Key Selection Criteria – Qualifications; Knowledge; Skills & Experience

To be considered for this role; candidates must have:

  • Current RACGP QI&CPD number and be willing to be named as the GP involved in the planning for RACGP accredited activities;
  • Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a medical practitioner and experience working as a General Practitioner in Gippsland;
  • Knowledge of the health care system in the relevant region including key service providers and individuals;
  • Commitment to embedding evidence based practice and other quality improvement activities into general practice as a means to improved patient outcomes;
  • Expertise in continuing professional development indicated by involvement in education, training and experience
  • High level communication and negotiation skills together with the ability to exercise sound judgement.
  • Appropriate computer skills with a proficiency in the use of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).

General Requirements

The candidate will be required to assist the GPHN Education and Training Officer by:

  • Attending meetings, be timely in response to emails,be available for phone calls at mutually convenient times as the need arises;
  • Promote arranged events to colleagues and encouraging fellow GP attendance at events;
  • Recommend innovative educational and training opportunities to all areas of Gippsland being particularly mindful of supporting GPs in more isolated areas.

Other Requirements

  • Provide a current Victorian National Police Check certificate;
  • Provide evidence of professional qualifications; and
  • Hold a current Victorian Driver’s Licence
