Overview of the Week:

We will read several new stories this week. We will enjoy Minerva Louise (a big book), and The Box, in our Reading Anthology. As we read these stories students will work on comprehension skills with an emphasis on noting details and distinguishing between what could be real and what is fantasy in a story. Reader’s Workshopis continuing to be a time for growing as readers in 1P. Each child is being assessed on the concepts we have practiced so far. Ask your child how he/she can build up his/her reading “muscles.” In phonics we will work with the graphemic bases–og, -ot,
and –op. Students will practice reading and writing the short /o/ sound. Students will be able to associate this sound with the letter o. We will also continue to develop writing skills by writing in journals and in Writer’s Workshop. In Writer’s Workshop we willstart planning our first story which is a small moment: personal narrative piece. The focus will be on improving the quality of writing by adding details to a story written about one small moment.

In math we will continue to work on the concept ofsubtraction. We have used pictures to help us solve subtraction problems. This week we will use bar models to solve subtraction problems, and we will compare with subtraction. The vocabulary for this week: compare, difference, fewer, more, minus.

In Science, we will continue to work in the FOSS Science program with Balance and Motion. We will begin our investigation of Motion.

As part of the school wide initiative in Character Education, we will discuss and respond to Win Win Guidelines.

Have a fun week!
