Tragic Death Stuns Business Community
Ken Munro
Dundee business community was stunned yesterday by the news of the tragic death in a car crash of 41 year old Mr Ken Munro, Managing Director of the Wester Gourdie based Munro Group.
Police named him as the victim of a horrific accident on snow covered Kingsway in the early hours of yesterday morning.
The crash happened as Mr Munro was driving back to his home at 27 Redcastle Crescent from Edinburgh Airport. He had flown north from London where he had been addressing a European Studies Conference. Mr Munro’s silver Audi Quattro left the east bound carriageway of the Kingsway 100 yards east of the Strathmartine Road Circle about 12.30 a.m., mounted the central reservation and carried on for some distance then hit a tree. The car was sliced in two and it is understood that Mr Munro died instantly. No other vehicle was involved.
Honours Degree
Born in Dundee, Mr Munro was educated at Harris Academy, before gaining an honours degree in electrical engineering at the former University College, Dundee.
He also took a diploma in management studies at the College of Technology and latterly was an external examiner at the College in the subject.
He was a Member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, and the Incorporation of Hammermen of Dundee.
Mr Munro, an elder of St Margaret’s Church Barnhill, is survived by his wife, Laura, a teacher at Grove Academy, two daughters Karen and Lynn, his father James and brother Grant.
Under Mr Munro’s Managing Directorship, Munro Group had been having its busiest year and just three months ago the company announced £3,000,000 of contracts for work at Clydebank and Methil.
“Tragedy”
Chamber of Commerce President Mr Harry Terrell described Mr Munro’s death as a tragedy, not only for his family and many friends and colleagues, but for Dundee.
He was one of a new breed of young businessmen and entrepreneurs - who are in the vanguard of the industrial resurgence of the City,” he added.
Mr John Beaton, Managing Director of Kolfor Plant Ltd and a friend of Mr Munro’s for many years described his death as “ A tremendous shock to everyone who knew him”.
Of the Munro Group, Ken’s father Mr Jim Munro said, “the Group will carry on as before, the management structure is adequate and competent enough to carry it on in the manner it has been running”.
