Introduction
If you have Windows XP configured to use the classic logon dialog box, you may want to reinforce it with a set of warning messages to deter anyone thinking of attempting unauthorized access. Although this type of measure doesn’t add any real protection to the system, it might be all that’s needed to prevent an unauthorized user from proceeding.
To set up the messages, you must add a series of string values to the Winlogon key in the Windows XP registry. These modifications will add a separate warning dialog box to the logon procedure as well as add warning messages to the existing Log On To Windows, Windows Security, Computer Locked, and Unlock Computer dialogs.
Instead of manually adding these settings to the registry, you can use the Logon Security Editor. When you run this tool, it will display a dialog box that allows you to easily enter custom warning messages simply by filling in a set of text boxes.
Installation
In addition to the readme file, LogonSecurityEditor.zip contains two files:
· LogonSecurityEditor.txt—The main HTML application file, named with a .txt extension to prevent problems with AV filters
· lse.ico—The icon for the control menu and the taskbar
To install the Logon Security Editor, simply copy the files to a folder of your choice and rename LogonSecurityEditor.txt to LogonSecurityEditor.hta.
Using the Logon Security Editor
To launch the Logon Security Editor, just double-click LogonSecurityEditor.hta.
The Logon Security Editor contains four panels, titled Legal Notice Title, Legal Notice Text, Logon Warning, and Security Unlock Warning—one for each of the settings associated with Windows XP’s logon security feature. Each panel contains three buttons:
· The Display button will show you the current status of the associated setting.
· The Change button will allow you to add the appropriate warning message.
· The Remove button will let you remove the warning message.
