Pharmacy Technology Program
This document comprises a strategic plan for Lamar State College- Orange Pharmacy Technology Program. It reviews its strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities; presents a series of fundamental statements relating to Lamar State College- Orange Pharmacy Technology Program's vision, mission, values, and objectives; and sets out proposed strategies, goals, and actions.
Pharmacy Technology Program Philosophy
The philosophy of the Pharmacy Technology Program supports the values and ideals of Lamar State College - Orange through excellence in instruction, opportunities for personal growth as well as career preparation and cooperation with the surrounding community. The faculty believes this Pharmacy Technology Program is an integral part of the College and is designed to promote excellence in the field of pharmacy technology.
The faculty believes that learning is a life-long process that promotes the survival and enhancement of human existence. It progresses from simple to complex. Learning occurs when there is a change in behavior resulting from a recognized need. Each student has dignity and worth and brings unique life experiences to the educational environment. Learning is maximized when it occurs in an environment, which is both positive and nurturing. Information and learning processes are organized through the use of objectives, plans, learning activities, relevant content and experiences and evaluation of program components and outcomes. The experiential practice component will occur in community settings where pharmacy services can be delivered in a manner consistent with the philosophy of the program.
Mission Statement
The Pharmacy Technology program is competency-based and will teach the appropriate skills, knowledge, and perspectives needed to succeed within the Pharmacy Technology field. Students will be given the opportunity to attain competence in oral and written communication as well as math and computer skills specific to the workplace. The program was developed in 1997 to meet the area workforce needs for institutional, retail, and long-term care pharmacies.
Accreditation Standard
The Lamar State College – Orange Pharmacy Technology Program has been accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) since 1998. Aside from several regulations the program must meet, ASHP requires the program ensure each candidate for graduation has met their Educational Goals and Objectives. These Educational Goals are included on your training plan. At Orientation a copy of these Educational Goals will be provided to you, and this document will be available on the Pharmacy Technology website as well. You, as the student, are responsible for being familiar with these Educational Goals and performing a self-evaluation each semester of the program at the direction of the instructor(s).

· Develop and implement higher level continuing education courses that provide ACPE accredited certifications.
· Partner with local high schools to offer the pharmacy technician program as dual-credit courses.
· Maintaining our American Society of Health-System Pharmacist (ASHP) accreditation
Business Objectives Goals
· To continually increase enrollment and class size by broadening our marketing strategy
· To partner with the Texas Workforce Commission to help provide financial assistance to students seeking a career as a pharmacy technician.
Operational Objectives:

Timeline for Goal Accomplishments
Short Term Goals (1-3 years) and Strategies for meeting goals:
· Increase program enrollment to twenty students
o Faculty and Students will attend job fairs, health fairs and other appropriate events to help recruit students.
o Faculty and Students will attend and/or volunteer at community events to promote wellness and awareness.
· Mass market advertising for higher level ACPE accredited certifications.
o Promote higher level ACPE accredited continuing education certifications through clinical site.
o Use advertising sources to increase awareness of the program in the local community.
· Develop and implement higher level continuing education courses that provide ACPE accredited certifications.
o Faculty will attend courses to obtain instructor certifications.
· Partner with local high schools to offer the pharmacy technician program as dual-credit courses.
o Provide high school counselors and students with information highlighting dual-credit opportunities.
Long Term Goals (5 years) and Strategies for Meeting Goals.
· Maintain or exceed a 90% pass rate for the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam.
o Each PHRA class has added PTCB practice test questions in chapter review activities.
o Students will participate in two days of PTCB practice exam sessions prior to graduation.
o Encourage students to take the exam prior to graduation
· Maintain or exceed 85% program completion rate.
o Evaluate the students prior to acceptance and determine if this program is appropriate for their career expectations and to help increase graduation and pass rate.
o Evaluate each student at mid semester and discuss with them individually their progress and expectations.
· Maintain or exceed 85% for Student/Graduate/Employer Overall Program Satisfaction Rate
o Review the summary of the completed surveys and determine if any changes should be implemented.
o Discuss the survey summary with the advisory board and ask for suggestions on improvement.
· Maintain or exceed 85% for Graduate Job Placement Rate
o Faculty will work closely with the industry to ensure that current training practices are being taught to students prior to externships.
The strategic plan is analyzed and evaluated every spring. The process of the plan is reviewed by the advisory board committee, suggestions and approval is documented in the meeting minutes.
