On-Level Math at West Forsyth High School

(Algebra 1 and Geometry)

·  Students rarely receive time in class to complete assignments. There will be approximately 30 minutes of homework each night to be done outside of class time. Homework is the opportunity for students to do additional practice without teacher assistance and to self-assess their understanding before moving on to the next lesson. Completing all assignments is very important for success in the class.

·  Students MUST take their own notes each day in class. Student notes will be an essential review source for all assessments. Since note-taking may be new for some students, in the beginning teachers will guide the students through the process.

·  Students are expected to show their work for each problem on both homework and all assessments. Answers alone may not receive credit.

·  A day or two before an assessment, students may receive a review sheet. Completion of this review is important to the final preparation for the assessment. Students are also expected to review all notes and assignments in preparation for assessments as well. The day before the assessment, teachers will go over the review with the students to answer any remaining questions.

·  Both formative and summative assessments will have free response questions where proper work must be shown.

·  Retesting ---- except for extraordinary circumstances, there is NO RETESTING.

·  Participation in class is important to success in math, especially at the high school level. Disengagement and inattentiveness will usually lead to failure.

·  Your child’s teacher will have regularly scheduled help sessions before and/or after school each week. This is the opportunity for your child to get extra help, extra practice, ask additional questions, get clarifications necessary to be successful.

·  Students will use the TI-30XS MultiView scientific calculator. Students are expected to have their own calculator to use both in class and at home.
