Spain Language and Cultural Exchange

A delegation of 12Dominion students and two teachers is invited to visit the Institut Cami de Mar in Calafell, region of Tarragona, Spain in March 2018. This is the firstyear of the exchange. This trip will provide a unique opportunity for Dominion students to, among other things, experience authentic Spanish culture and customs, increase their foreign language proficiency and their cross-cultural communication skills.

Dates:

March 16th to March 25th 2018; students will miss 5 days of school.

Estimated Costs:

Currently, airfare to Spain costs about $1200 and the stay in Madrid (hotel, food, transportation, tickets to touristic attractions) will run at about $350. The total estimated cost for 2 chaperones and 12 students is about$2000 per student. Students should also plan on bringing at least $200 of spending money. Students may participate in fundraisers that will offset a small part of this cost.

Accomodations:

Students will participate in a home stay with a Spanish student. The home stay has been a highlight for students that participated in other exchanges. For the last 3 days, students will stay at a hotel in Madrid.

Itinerary:

Institut Camí de Mar is arranging an itinerary that will include a variety of cultural and educational activities. Students will observe and participate in classes at Institut Camí de Mar, visit the region of Tarragona, and spend a day in Barcelona. We will conclude the trip with a 2 night stay in Madrid.

Curricular Connections:

Participating Dominion students will apply Spanish language skills and expand cultural understanding by accessing information beyond the classroom setting. The participating students will demonstrate skills necessary to sustain extended oral and written exchanges in Spanish. They will examine local, regional and national differences between Spain and the US.

Student selection:

All students who wish to attend must be currently enrolled in a Spanish course and complete an application by October 27th. Selected students will be notified by October 30th and need to submit a $1000 deposit by November 9th.
