Instrument rent: Students need to rent, borrow or own their band instrument for this class. The Academy and Public School have instruments available to rent for students at $30.00 a year for brass and $40.00 a year for woodwind. Your son/daughter will not be given an instrument to use until that rent check is given to me at the band room. Make the check out to Knights Band and it will be covered for which ever school you rent from. I will not turn the checks in until Sept. 4th. Depending on the school who owns your instrument that school will get the rent check.

***We will be spending the first days of band checking out the instruments to make sure they have one and a book. Fifth grade students will spend more time than sixth in deciding what to use for an instrument. Most all sixth graders will be ready to go from last year- same book ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS 2000. Once we have decided they will discuss it with you on the first weekend and you can then send a check back for the instrument they are looking at. I do hope some of you decided to purchase your own because of the difference in quality. If you want to purchase your own you can do that as soon as they decide and then bring it to school as soon as you get it because they will need something to practice on if they are not using the schools. PLEASE CHECK THE BRANDS AND QUALITY BEFORE ORDERING ON LINE OR EBAY!!

The sixth grade will use the same book as last year and the 5th grade will need to purchase this book for around $10.00 with a CD for practicing with.

Grading for band is based on practice, participation, quizzes and daily behavior.

They will need to practice 60 minutes a week for weekly progress points.

The other 40 points will come from participation in class.

Once a quarter they will have a quiz that is worth 100 points as well.

Many of them have a spot in their book they can keep track of their minutes or just on any piece of paper is fine also. If they don't get their 60 minutes in have them turn in what they do have because every little bit counts!!

Students in piano/guitar lessons can count half of their minutes from piano because this is note reading also.

** If they get behind on minutes I will have a BAND-AID program after school where they can work with me at that time to get in some minutes.

Grading will be on Engrade: Students will be expected to turn in 60 minutes a week when assigned and participate daily as well as remembering their instrument , book, pencil each day for band. Students interested in playing a solo at Elgin Band contest in the Spring will need to maintain a 90% average and turn in their 60 minutes weekly. There will be one week of an exception for each quarter and still qualify to play a solo if interested. Everyone will be playing in a small group that I assign for the Elgin Band Contest.

Activites:

5th ad 6th grade activities will be Christmas concert, Elgin Band clinic, and spring concert, and 6th grade students to Neligh event April 20th

*Both grades will need a white or light shirt and dark pants/skirt for their concerts.

Parents

Please read this syllabus especially the rent and grading information so we will all be on the same page.

Please keep this page and turn in the extra sheet with your signature, childs signature, and the check for rent if needed.

I understand this is an investment just like tennis shoes or anything they will need for other curricular activities. The great part is that they don’t grow out of their instrument. Matter fact my son played the one I played in Junior High and High School !!! Yes that is hard to believe. Sure wish I fit into my same tennis shoes that I used in Junior High - Just kidding!!!

Thanks for such great kids and support for this life long love of music for your kids. If you have any concerns let me know and I'll try to help you out.

Musically yours,

Maureen Thome

Next Page needs to return to Mrs. Thome by the end of August at the latest. The sooner they turn it in the sooner they will receiver their instrument if renting.
