Application for Promotion to Senior Lecturer

Notes on Completing the Application Form

1.  Promotion to Senior Lecturer is based on merit. An assessment is made of staff performance in the areas of teaching, research, and administration. This application form has been designed to collect the information necessary for this assessment, in a standardized format which will facilitate the comparison of candidates. PLEASE DO NOT SEND A COVERING LETTER OR CV OR ATTACH ADDITIONAL PAGES. The form has been designed to allow sufficient space for the necessary information. Not all staff will be able to enter information in all sections – some are subject-specific. However, it is expected that candidates for promotion to Senior Lecturer will be able to provide information in most of the sections.

Having regard to the descriptors set out in the Guidelines for the Consideration of Applications for Senior Lectureship, candidates are asked to provide a self assessment based on available evidence of their performance in each area relevant to the promotion.

2.  Applications are considered by the Staffing Committee at two special meetings, usually

in January and March each year. In the first meeting a short list of candidates is drawn up on the basis of the submitted applications and the references provided by referees nominated by candidates. For short listed candidates, research quality is assessed by independent external assessors and the quality of teaching by a Review Panel composed of a Pro Vice Chancellor, the Deans and an independent external assessor. These assessments are taken into account by the Staffing Committee in the second of the two meetings. In order to progress to the second round, candidates will normally be expected to demonstrate evidence of achievement at level one in each of the areas of teaching, research and administration, and level 3 in at least one, or, level 2 in all three (see Guidelines). In addition, the Committee expects evidence of a sustained performance or an upward trajectory.

3.  Candidates who are not promoted may, on request, obtain feedback on their application from the Dean of the relevant Faculty.

4.  Heads of Department are asked to countersign the application form to confirm the factual accuracy of the information supplied by the candidate. If the HoD is unable to provide such confirmation he/she must provide a short statement giving reasons. This statement must be seen and signed by the applicant, who shall have the right to add his/her own comments. The Head of Department will also be asked to comment separately on the work of the candidate in each area relevant to the promotion.

5.  Heads of Department are also requested to submit with each application form the names of FOUR senior academics who would be able to offer an expert and independent opinion on the application.

6.  Staff who are on probation will not normally be considered for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

7. Candidates should bear in mind when completing the form the need to provide only material relevant to the consideration of promotion to Senior Lecturer level. Extraneous material should be excised and major achievements stressed.
