COMPANION DOG TRAINING CLASSES
Aim; The COMPANION DOG courses aims to provide handlers with the skills & knowledge to train their dogs in exercises which are designed to cope with everyday living.
The training is designed to produce dogs which enjoy training and the training will be specific to every individual dog & handler.
Eligibility; The Scheme is aimed at all dogs, there is no age limit. For the Companion Dog assessment, dogs are
not required to have completed the Companion Puppy course or had any other formal training.
Dogs with behavioural issues and which may disrupt a class, may need to seek help before joining the class.

Assessments
An opportunity to have the dog assessed as suitable to receive the Companion Dog Awards will be available at the end of each term.

Exercise 1 - Cleanliness and Identification
Exercise 2 – Turning on it’s name
Exercise 3 - Walking on a lead
Exercise 4 - Meeting a dog unknown to the puppy
Exercise 5 - Meeting an adult person unknown to the puppy
Exercise 6- Play with the puppy
Exercise 7 - Puppy recall
Exercise 8 - Basic sit/down/stand positions
Exercise 9 - – Maintain a position for ten seconds
Exercise 10 - Handling and inspection

Exercise 1 – Understanding of the Laws relating to owning a dog
Exercise 2- Turning on it’s name
Exercise 3 – Loose lead walking
Exercise 4 - Control at an obstacle
Exercise 5 – Walking through a crowd
Exercise 6- Meeting a person in a controlled way
Exercise 7 – Play with the dog
Exercise 8 – Grooming and handling
Exercise 8–Recall -controlled sit/down
Exercise 9 – Sit- Stand- Down
Exercise 10–One min. stay at 6 paces
- INTERMEDIATE
Exercise 1 – Dog turning on it’s name- away from another dog and person
Exercise 2- Walking to heel (on lead)
Exercise 3 – Outdoor walk
Exercise 4 - Recall through distractions
Exercise 5- Bring the dog to heel (either left or right)
Exercise 6- Play with the Dog
Exercise 7 - Food manners
Exercise 8 - Sit/ Stand/Down at a distance of 3 paces
Exercise 9 - Stay in One Place for Two Minutes - 6 paces away
- ADVANCED
Exercise 1 – Heel off lead and past distractions
Exercise 2 –Recall to heel while walking
Exercise 3 - Food Control- turning your dog away from a bowl off food.
Exercise 4 – Play (running recall)- calling your dog off something when it is running.
Exercise 5 - Send the Dog to Bed
Exercise 6 - Stop the Dog- control the dog in a sit/down at a distance
Exercise 7 – 2 minute stay (with one minute out of sight)
