Finish Your Quilt

Taught by Amy Spanne

Supplies:

  • Sewing machine in good working order with new needle (I use a 90/14 needle, mostly)
  • Feet for your machine: 1) Free Motion foot (the embroidery circle foot), 2) a 1/4” foot for your machine, 3) if you have a “walking foot” for your machine, bring it. Because we have so much info to cover, it’s important for you to be familiar with putting on your foot and/or setting your machine up for free motion. (If you aren’t sure, bring the box with all your feet. Bring your manual!)
  • Basic sewing notions (scissors, needles, seam ripper, etc.)
  • Rulers to use with your rotary cutter, one at least 12” x 3” and one small square – 3 ½” or 6½ ”
  • Rotary cutter
  • Rotary cutting mat (we have a few available in our classroom)
  • Wonder Clips and/or straight pins
  • Your quilt top, batting & backing fabric or 2 to 4 pre-made quilt sandwiches (fabric-batting-fabric). For practice sandwiches, I like to take placemat size scraps, make them into quilt sandwiches using scrap batting. Warm & Natural is my favorite batting, but you should use what you will use on your “real” project. Short of scraps? Take 2 1-yard pieces and cut them in 4 fat quarters. They will be the perfect size to play with.
  • Quality quilting thread in complementary or coordinating colors. My favorite is Superior So Fine!, but Mettler and Gutermann are very good too.
  • Binding fabric for your finished project or two complimentary fabrics, about ½ to ¾ yard each to practice different bindings on your practice pieces – again, scraps are good here.
  • Quilting Gloves. You can get the gloves from the store, or I use yellow dishwashing gloves.
  • Safety pins or basting spray, whichever you prefer to hold the sandwich together. You end up putting safety pins about every 6”. So measure your finished quilt top’s length and width, divide those measurements by 6, then multiply the two numbers to get roughly how many safety pins you’ll need. I buy packs of 2” pins that come in about 50 per pack.
