14. General Summary of Function/Purpose of Position
Primary job is to protect human life, property and natural resources by prevention and suppressing wildfires. Fire Suppression activities include performing physically and mentally demanding duties directly on the fire line. Take charge on fires as Incident Commander being responsible for evacuation of citizens, direction of fire suppression forces, strategically and tactical decisions, and coordination with other emergency service agencies. Training fire departments on tactic and build a good working relationship with all fire crews. Prevention meaning keeping track of the daily fire weather for the use of issuing burning permits. Fire Investigation knowledge responsible for proving how fires are started and be able to testify in court to my findings. Snowmobile program responsibilities including trail inspections and documentation to ensure the safety of the snowmobile trails. Being able to complete the reports of any accidents that occur in case of any legal action. Required to assist in land management activities. Prescribed burns to benefit fuel reduction, forest cultivation and wildlife habitat. ORV, pathway management, facility management, equipment maintenance.

Duty 1

General Summary of Duty 1 % of Time 21
The main purpose of this job is to suppress wildfires, investigate how they started. Being able to take command of the fire, in a safe but aggressive manner. Working with and training local fire departments to make for better working relationships. Also keeping track of and maintaining records of daily weather conditions.
Individual tasks related to the duty.
·  Investigate fires, collecting and preserving evidence.
·  Completing reports
·  Working on fire suppression on hot line
·  Incident Commander on fire suppression efforts
·  Train local fire departments in wildfire tactics and suppression strategy's
·  Monitor the Weather conditions for manpower
·  Equipment operator
·  Determine evacuation if necessary
·  Assess daily weather conditions and compute danger with the Canadian Forest Fire Rating System
·  Maintain a fire readiness on all Equipment at the Roscommon Field Office
·  Perform in overhead positions such as Engine Boss and Task /Force Leader for Out west and Instate Assignments with other federal agencies

Duty 2

General Summary of Duty 2 % of Time 7
Provide Fire Prevention awareness for the surrounding community.
Individual tasks related to the duty.
·  Pick out prevention material and distribute them to the community
·  Attending fire association meetings to coordinate fire prevention messages
·  Demonstrating Fire Equipment at local events
·  Determines burning permits availability after checking local conditions
·  Assist with coordinating wildfire prevention programs in the protection area using a variety of resources and media materials such as Smokey Bear

Duty 3

General Summary of Duty 3 % of Time 10
Training
Individual tasks related to the duty.
·  Give a safety training class to individual Volunteer Fire Departments on wildfire suppression and Fire Shelter Deployment.
·  Instruct MIWFF’s Training session each spring on operation of the equipment, safety and wildfire suppression
·  Go over and make sure MIWFF’s have the proper personnel protective equipment.
·  Receive training – computer, forest certification, etc
·  Assist with training other division employees
·  Assist with coordinating Fire Fighting Training Council courses
·  Assist with training of volunteers and user groups in our policy requirements on our State managed lands

Duty 4

Assist and participates in recreation areas that cover four local campgrounds, keeping them safe and clean for customers use, working with and overseeing the STW work on maintenance.
Campgrounds

·  Assist with the oversight of Short Term Workers in the campgrounds and with training
·  Ensure Safe Campgrounds
·  Collect money and make deposits
·  Order supplies when needed
·  Monitor usage of the campground and assist law enforcement with compliance of policy & regulations.
·  Maintains signs in and around the campgrounds including placing new sings repairing and staining old signs

Duty 5

Assists with the administration of contracts with the local snowmobile club.

·  Assist with investigation of accidents on snowmobile trails

Oversees Wildfire Incident which could include evacuation, resource assignments and plan of attack.
These decisions could predict the outcome of the fire size, loss of structures but most important injury or loss of life.
Remove or identify hazards found in the campground, pathways or snowmobile trails. This could cause a severe injury or death if not taken care of in a timely manner.

23. What are the essential duties of this position?
Wildland fire suppression, equipment maintenance, fire prevention and the recreation program, including snowmobile trail and pathway maintenance. The ability to calculate fire danger from weather data collected at the office and automated sites. Computer skills are essential for report writing, gathering data and communicating. Occasional work or duties assisting the Forest Fire Experiment Station .
24. Indicate specifically how the position’s duties and responsibilities have changed since the position was last reviewed.
Fire Officers must be trained to a Department defined level now and maintain good fitness and professionalism in the eyes of the public. A fire officer must be able to work more independently than before. A large degree of what we do is associated with computer applications, and because of this, a fire officer needs to be able to perform the basic functions on a computer.
25. What is the function of the work area and how does this position fit into that function?
Fire officers are identified as the wildland fire professional in the community. They must be knowledgeable about fire behavior, weather and fuels. Equipment must be maintained to a readiness level that will allow it to be dispatched anywhere in the state during times of fire danger. Knowledge of the local area is essential not only for fire, but also for providing the public with information about recreational opportunities. The fire officer is viewed as one of knowledge and authority and must be viewed as such when giving direction to the public. Knowledge of the entire Department’s programs is essential.
26. In your opinion, what are the minimum education and experience qualifications needed to perform the essential functions of this position.
EDUCATION:
Education Typically acquired through the completion of high school.
EXPERIENCE:
Work experience fighting fires as a member of an organized fire department (state, county, township, municipal, federal or military) with completion of the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council’s Level 1A and B Basic Training Course or equivalent military training course.
OR
Two seasonal years of experience as a DNR key person.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
