PORT OPERATIVE
JOB DESCRIPTION
The role of the Port Operative is that of a multi-functional individual. The Port Operative is required to carry out a variety of tasks as directed by the Harbour Master, Deputy Harbour Master or Foreman on shift. These tasks include the following:
1. Form part of Port Operative’s Rotas in accordance with the provisions of the staff rota, detailed in the Staff Rota Policy contained within the Employee Handbook, and will include working on Public/Bank holidays, on a 24/7 basis dependent upon the needs of the operation of the Port.
2. Assist with all berthings / unberthings.
3. Operate both linkspans as required.
4. Assist with visiting yachts daily and at weekends whilst on shift.
5. Utilizing trade skills/experience to carry out repairs and maintenance routines on all Port Authority plant and facilities, including but not limited to: property, Linkspans, Navigation Lights, Pilot Boat, Vehicles, Marina, and public lighting.
6. Utilizing trade skills/experience to improve and upgrade Port Authority owned facilities and equipment.
7. Assist with slipping (four in number required) each slipping.
8. Operate main winch Slipway.
9. Operate hydraulic rams from tower main cradle.
10. Cleaning duties of all harbour areas.
11. Clean Fish Mart as required.
12. Crew Pilot Boat as required.
13. Operate fork lift truck.
14. Complete maintenance logs.
15. Complete Arrivals Log / Daily Log.
16. Take payments from visiting yachts and record / weekends.
17. Operate and maintain crab crane.
18. Operate weighbridges when required (computerised system).
19. Monitor bunkering operations.
20. Attend training courses as required for port operations, safety, pollution control, first aid, forklift, etc.
21. Crew ‘Amity’ when required.
22. Carry out pier and fender repairs where appropriate.
23. Pollution control as directed by Harbour Master / Deputy Harbour Master / Foreman.
24. Assist Foreman with any reasonable task.
25. Relieve Watchkeepers occasionally during holidays and sickness as well as Rota for Saturday and Sunday dayshift watch.
26. Assist with berthing / unberthing vessels at Arnish.
27. Assist with fueling visiting yachts.
28. Carry out security duties when required.
29. Maintaining stocks of ice as required
30. Any other reasonable duty as required by the needs of the operation of the port
31. To carry out and participate in Risk Assessment procedures.
32. To work safely and ensure the safety of yourself, your colleagues and general public.
33. To comply with company procedures and policies.
34. As a public representative of the Stornoway Port Authority to carry out daily work duties in a professional manner.
