MATH 6 EXTENDED LAB COURSE INFORMATION SHEET

Ellen Falk

2012-2013

Course Goals: To combine class instruction with a variety of learning experiences with computer-based programs to help each student reach his/her optimal learning level. Reinforcing activities and games that provide real-time feedback and allow trouble areas to be pinpointed enabling each student to develop a strong foundation in number concepts, number sense, place value and basic math operations is a goal of this course. Fluency in the basic math facts and processes is an essential foundation for higher mathematics.

A main focus in Math Extended will be Number Sense and Operations; as described below. This focus is to strengthen their math foundation to allow easier access to higher level thinking that is required with the new Common Core Math Standards.

Number Sense and Operations:

  • To understand numbers, ways of representing numbers, relationships among numbers, and number systems. In the middle school, the expectations for students are to work flexibly with fractions, decimals and percents to solve problems; compare and order fractions, decimals and percents; develop meaning for percents greater than 100 and less than 1; understand and use ratios and proportions to represent quantitative relationships; develop an understanding of large numbers and recognize and appropriately use exponential, scientific, and calculator notation; use factors, multiples, prime factorization, and relatively prime numbers to solve problems; and lastly to develop meaning for integers and represent and compare quantities with them.
  • To understand meanings of operations and how they relate to on another. In grades 6-8, the expectations are to understand the meaning and effects of arithmetic operations with fractions, decimals, and integers; to use the associative, commutative, and distributive properties to simplify computations with integers, fractions and decimals; and to understand and use the inverse relationships of addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, and squaring and finding square roots to simplify computations and solve problems.
  • Compute fluently and make reasonable estimates. In grades 6-8, students should be able to select appropriate methods and tools for computing fractions anddecimals from among mental computation, estimation, calculators or computers, and paper and pencil, depending on the situation, and apply the selected methods; develop and analyze algorithms for computing with fractions, decimals, and integers, and develop fluency in their use; develop and use strategies to estimate the results of rational-number computations and judge the reasonableness of the results; develop, analyze, and explain methods for solving problems involving proportions, such as scaling and finding equivalent ratios.

Lab Activities will include, but not be limited to: math skill building, maintenance and practice for mastery, computer- guided instruction, lessons on the Smart Board, problem solving strategies, collaborative and independent work, and self-regulated learning.

Assessment Policy: Students will be assessed on all activities completed in the lab. They are expected to be on task.

Schedule, Homework, and Grading Policy: Grading is Pass/Fail. Students are expected to do their best. Math Extended is a course that is a supplement to the math curriculum. Grade 6 has XT every other day for both semesters. Grade 7 and Grade 8 have Math XT every other day for one semester.

Extra Help: Two times per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) extra help will be given in room C-203 or C-200

Supplies: These will be kept in the lab in a folder.

  • 5 pencils
