The genetic technologist is the one who is basically a professional and works in a pharmaceutical industry in a laboratory to perform the genetic research or testing. The main objective and basic function is to identify the chromosomal abnormalities based on different samples. Mostly they reaches for medical universities, legal agencies, agricultural firms and law agencies.

Duties & Responsibilities

The person desiring to be a genetic technologist has the following duties and responsibilities to fulfill and they are as follows

  • The technologist needs to have the proper knowledge of the He must know the procedure of processing samples and cell culture.
  • He or she has to prepare the chromosomal material properly.
  • It will be the responsibility to store the valuable data obtained from laboratory research.
  • He or she has to detect chromosomes to identify abnormalities.
  • It is needed to use the fluorescence in suite hybridization and also the microscope to diagnose related chromosome functions.
  • It will be the duty to prepare the slide before conducting any research or test.
  • He or she has to decide a suitable technique in molecular genetics techniques.
  • A genetic technologist also has the duty to process the DNA/ RNA and PCR procedures when needed.
  • He or she has to maintain the coordination with the concerned lab staff.

Education and Qualifications

  • The basic degree required for the job isbachelors in biology stream along with genetic laboratory courses.
  • The other requirement is that the person must be M. Sc in genetic science with diploma in forensic lab research or microbiology with minimum experience of two years.
