LTS 1

QUALIFICATIONS

Maximum level of supervision with detailed instruction and follow-up

basic paraprofessional library tasks

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Circ: work at desk, charge/discharge, assist with Aleph, answer directional questions and questions about circ services, retrieve and reshelve items, sort and arrange retrieval/hold/ILL/reserve shelves

E-Res: page and scan materials, create basic entries in E-Res system, answer basic questions about E-Res service

ALF/LAD: retrieve and reshelve items on 15' high ladders, drive retrieval van, load and unload van, open and close facilities

ILL: bibliographic searching, process requests through ILLiad, receive and process materials electronically or physically, page materials from collections to lend via Doc Delivery or to another institution, answer basic questions about ILL services via telephone/email/in person

Specialized paraprofessional library tasks with more responsibility and autonomy

high school diploma and four years experience/education

  • Moderate level of supervision with detailed instruction and follow-up
  • Intermediate understanding and operation of hardware and software

Ability to handle complex functions in library catalog

  • Ability to handle complex functions in databases
  • Recommends procedural changes
  • May assist in supervision of OPS/work study staff (lead worker)

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Circ (in addition to duties of LTA): handle patron complaints, troubleshoot public equipment such as printers/PCs/copiers/card dispensers, maintain and report statistics, process notices and reports, bill/credit patrons through University Accounts Receivable system, help train and direct the work of student assistants, address problem reports, communicate with patrons via email/telephone/in person regarding the status of an account or resolution of a problem report, activate new accounts by verifying patron information in PeopleSoft or at partnering institution, activate cards for courtesy patrons and special programs, system liaison responsibilities

E-Res (in addition to duties of LTA): create accounts and courses in E-Res, monitor and respond to email for unit, check quality and copyright compliance for new materials placed on reserve by staff and faculty, create bibliographic records in Aleph for instructor-owned materials that will be placed on "hard copy" reserve at circulation desk, help train and direct the work of student assistants, system liaison responsibilities

ALF/LAD (in addition to duties of LTA): help train and may assist in supervising activities of OPS/work study staff, more advanced searches of problem requests, microfilm requests, reshelving microfilm, supervise special projects (shifting, reclassification, collection move, etc.), quick catalog microfilm for retrieval requests, receive and process new materials

ILL (in addition to duties of LTA): help train and may assist in supervising activities of OPS/work study staff, responsibility for more specialized tasks in ILLiad modules (all Borrowing queues, all Doc Delivery queues, all Lending queues, etc.), handle problem reports and message files, communicate with patrons or other institutions via email/telephone/in person regarding the status of an account or resolution of a problem report, work closely with ILL librarian and business office to handle invoices and billing

Acquisitions & Licensing Department: Able to add/remove software if permitted;

able to provide hardware diagnosis with instruction, attach orders, encumber, post payments to titles;

add records to catalog; work in foreign languages;

places orders on vendor's website/database;

follow up problems or claims;

provides supervisor with information about ease of use or workflow with suggestions;

loading vendor files into library system; catalogs serials in all formats and languages; maintains and corrects serial holdings;

LTS 3 QUALIFICATIONS

Advanced (sophisticated*) paraprofessional tasks, considerable responsibility and autonomy

high school degree plus six years of relevant experience/education

  • Minimal level of supervision with general instruction
  • Advanced understanding and operation of hardware and software
  • Ability to handle complex functions in library catalog
  • Ability to handle complex functions in databases
  • Recommends procedural changes
  • Supervises OPS/work study and/or permanent staff

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Access Services: more than 10% but less than 50% of position is dedicated to hiring, training, scheduling and supervising student assistants and/or full-time staff including payroll approval; serve as assistant unit head (for example, works evenings when unit head works days, etc.) to manage unit activities; committee work; manage a branch in absence of librarian

Acquisitions & Licensing Department: Reviews and documents workflow;

recommends software/hardware needed for workflow; trains other staff in the department and the branches;

analyzes need for change;

develops alternate solutions with supervisor; recommends for hiring/firing;

trains in all procedures;

handles electronic and licensing issues;

orders/pays for unique material;

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Access Serv: Manage unit including all staff, budgets, and other resources as directed by department chair (presumes that more than 50% of position is dedicated to hiring, training, scheduling and supervising student assistants and/or full-time staff including payroll approval), perform professional and/or administrative tasks including formal patron instruction, Refexpress, answering more advanced inquiries at information desk, committee work, professional development, policy and procedure development

Acquisitions & Licensing Department: Plans, coordinates and directs activities of a unit in the A&L Department; develops and updates unit policy and procedure; proposes improvements to A&L fiscal policy to department chair; formulates goals and establishes objectives and priorities of unit; supervises archivist; determines correct treatment for non-routine transactions and ensures treatment is carried out by unit staff; participates with department chair and other unit heads in setting department's goals, budgeting, policy-making and setting departmental priorities; directs, supervises and evaluates the work of the a unit; trains new staff; encourages conditions leading to high staff morale and effectiveness; gathers, compiles, analyzes and interprets statistics and information pertaining to unit and department activities; coordinates unit's work with other A&L units and other working units in the library;

Keeps abreast of current public services and library science topics. Participates in related professional development programs, as necessary.

Participates in bibliographic instruction program and orientation to Special Collections.

Participates in the Special Collections public services program by providing general reference services as well as advanced reference services for the Belknap Collection.

Participates in library development efforts and works with staff to develop grants.

Supervises and actively participates in the identification, acquisition, arrangement, description, and preservation of the Belknap Collection.

In collaboration with appropriate library staff, identifies and effects transfer of materials of historical value to the Belknap Collection.

Plans for the growth of the Collection and new avenues of intellectual access to it.

Interprets the Collection to students, faculty, and administrators and serves as a resource person on the history of the performing arts.

Develops exhibits and publications based on the Collection and works with the libraries’ public relations and development officers.

Pursues professional development and contributes service to the department and library.
