Choosing the Best Tool for your Courses:

Course Reserves, Course Pages, Angel

In selecting Course Reserves, Course Pages, or Angel products for your course, you can view these products and services as on a continuum, with the ability to provide content options and amount from least to most complex. Custom library services and resources are available in all of these environments.

Library Course Reserves: Readings for your Class!

Library reserves include two options: (1) reserves of print copies located in the library and (2) electronic reserves available online.

Reserves include books, copies of journal articles and book chapters, or audiovisual items that an instructor places on reserve in the ODU Library to supplement assigned coursework. Reserves can include ODU Library items or instructors’ personal copies. These items are made available from Circulation Services, set aside for specific courses. The loan period for reserve items is restricted according to the instructor's preference to ensure availability to the entire class.

Reserves have two important limitations:

1.  In the case of copyrighted materials, the individual responsible for the course is responsible for securing copyright permissions for readings for that course, whether for photocopies or electronic copies.

2.  Due to consortial contract obligations, items cannot be borrowed through OhioLINK and then placed on reserve.

E-Reserves are ideal for having photocopies of journal articles and book chapters of your choice placed online to be accessed at any time, on or off-campus, by a password created by you as instructor of a course and provided to E-Reserves staff.

E-Reserves are an excellent choice if you have:

·  Readings to place in the library or online for your course

·  Copyrighted materials

·  No need for any organization or order of these readings online

E-Reserves are created by library staff using materials provided by faculty.

E-Reserves can provide support for traditional courses designed otherwise to be strictly in the classroom, with face-to-face instruction; hybrid courses with an online Angel component; and distance learning courses.

To place items on reserve, complete the online Course Reserves Request form available via the library web site (http://library.ohiodominican.edu/screens/course.html) or stop by the Circulation Services Desk on the 3rd/Top floor of Spangler Learning Center to complete the print version.

Library Course Pages: Readings, Resources, & Tools Online!

A library course page on the library website is ideal for having links to readings and resources available to students to be accessed at any time, on or off-campus, in an organized fashion and kept up-to-date for your course through faculty and librarian collaboration.

A course page can be a single page listing linked resources or a set of pages providing detailed information, hands-on practice opportunities using library resources, and other library instructional documents.

Library course pages are an excellent option if you have:

·  Readings you wish your students to have that are not copyrighted or articles from databases that can be viewed full-text online and linked from a course page

·  Organized list of readings and/or resources

·  Organized web page of readings, resources, tools, and tutorials linked or developed by a librarian

·  Online bibliography of resources for a core seminar section, course, or set of courses

·  Online annotated bibliography of resources for a core seminar section, course, or set of courses

·  No need for a course-specific login for your students

Library course pages are created by librarians in collaboration with faculty.

Library course pages can provide support for traditional courses designed otherwise to be strictly in the classroom, face-to-face; hybrid courses with an online Angel component; and distance learning courses.

Course page creation and maintenance can involve continual librarian review of potential new library resources for consideration of inclusion in any course page, per faculty request. With the exception of the core seminar, course pages provide light to medium support for courses.

Angel: Anything is Possible!

Angel provides comprehensive learning management system features for a full range of online support of a course, from light to heavy support. Angel offers by far the most options available. Angel is used to store any document that could be digitized for a course. If an instructor is unable to digitize it, staff members of the Center for Instruction Technology and eLearning (CITe) are happy to do it for him or her.

For example, faculty can use Angel as an online environment for any of the following:

Reference & Instruction Services 2009

·  Faculty-created items such as syllabi, lessons, and more

·  Student assignments

·  Uploading PDFs

·  Faculty-student communications

·  Online interactivity

·  User groups

·  Video and audio

·  Online gradebook

Angel course shells are created by faculty or by CITe with the assistance of an Instructional Designer.

Librarians can be involved in collaboration with faculty to create resource pages within Angel if there is a desire to place all online learning resources within a single Angel course or to keep all links within Angel. Additionally, if a faculty member chooses Angel as the online foundation for his/her course, the individual can link to Reserves or a Course Page.
