Guest Speaker
Dr Peter Heysen
Peter traced his ancestry in Germany to the city of Hamburg and he showed us slides of where the family home once stood. He mainly concentrated on the Heysen family settlement in Australia especially South Australia. His forefathers supported schools in South Australia with many paintings but most of them have been sold much to his disappointment. He related a few of the folklaw stories of his family, one being of his grandmother who lived in Hurtle Square. She was a lady who helped many traders and those down on her luck. She always carried a loaded pistol with her and weekly she fired it into the air just to let those who came to her premises that she was boss. The cleaning of the gun was left to her grand daughter. However his attention soon turned to Hahndorf where the family settled in their home in what is now referred to as Heysen Lane. The home, The Cedars, is now the most complete historic house in Australia.
It is Peter’s mission to prevent the home being broken up. It is owned by four members of the family of whom three wish to sell.He wants to retain this valuable piece of history of an early settler family and above all the workplace of his grandfather Hans Heysen whose paintings adorn many galleries in Australia. Once a piece of history is gone, it is lost and it is hard to replace. Our generation have the responsibility of keeping our history. Thankyou Peter for being the custodian of your family history. The home still has Han’s studio set out as it was on his death. Pictures showing the steps Hans took to prepare a painting from a pencil sketch to the finished item are on display. The Foundation is worth $4-$5 million and its aim is to get art shows together quickly and reasonably cheaply to regional regions and schools. The house is on public show and to add to the visit wine, preserve fruit, a café and sculpture are also available. Last year some 25,000 visitors went through the house of which less than half were from Adelaide
Thank you Peter for this most interesting talk on your family history.
