You have chosen to be part of Calallen Middle School’sPre Advanced Placement Program. We are excited that you want to be challenged to perform at your best. You should expect rewarding outcomes. Working together - your teachers, parents, and yourself, you will find become more successful as the year progresses. Staying organized and meeting deadlines will be your greatest challenges! Don’t worry; you’ll get plenty of guidance. Completing your summer assignment will be your first challenging task. Are you up to it? Of course, you are!
You are required to read Holes, byLouis Sachar. You are also required to complete the following:
1)A reader’s sketchbook with eight entries that include illustrations, summaries, discussion of chapter, and quotations.
2)Discussion of three themes in your notebook.
3)The completion of three essay questions answered in your notebook.
Step 1 —Read Holes.
Step 2 — Create 8 Sketchbook Entries (choose any 8 chapters):
Eightentries that include colored illustrations, summaries, quotations, andquestions. Artists think in pictures. Cartoonists blend pictures and words to communicate their ideas. Using a sketchbook is like writing a journal with images. It will show how you think.
Each entry in your Reader’s Sketchbook must include in this order:
Chapter title or number
Drawing of events related to the heart of the chapter; the drawing must contain specific details from the chapter to show that you read it closely. The drawing should be a representation, not a summary of the text.
Summary- a brief retelling of the important facts from a story; beginning, middle, and end. Your summary must describe the characters andclarify the importance of events.(Who, What, Where, When, Why, How?)
Discussion of what the chapter means, what matters most, and why you think that.
Provide specific examples or details to support your statements. Try to note any observationyou connected to your own life or ideas.
Quotation(s) that relates to the drawing or connects to what you read. (This quotation should be placed below the illustration.)
Each section must be labeled. An example is given below.
Step 3 – After readingthe novel and at the end of your Sketchbook Entries, list and discuss three themes present throughout the reading. Each theme should be described in 3 – 5 sentences.
Example: Theme 1 – Friendship – Benefits of true friendships are clearly shown in Holes. Even though he is still facing adversity, once Stanley is secure in Zero's friendship he feels happier than he has ever felt in his life. Stanley and Zero both find common interest in bettering themselves while at the camp. The friendship betweenStanley and Zero eventually helps them obtain freedom and wealth.
Step 4 – After the Theme Entries, label three pages in your Sketchbook as Essay Question 1, Essay Question 2, and Essay Question 3. Each essay should have their own page in your Sketchbook.
Here are your three essay questions:
- Explain the part that peaches and smelly feet play in the novel.
- How and why did the Yelnats family curse begin? What effect has it had on family members? How is the curse broken?
- How does the present-day Green Lake differ from the Green Lake of one hundred years ago?
Note on Plagiarism:
Plagiarism from the novel or other sources will earn you a grade of “Zero” for the assignment. Your responses must be your own original answers and not a repeat of information from SparkNotes, PinkMonkey, or Classic-Notes, etc.
Materials: novel, wireless composition book, pen/pencil, and markers/crayons/map pencils
Write your name on the front cover. Write the title of the book and the author on the top portion of your first page. Write “Sketchbook” in the middle of the page in a creative way. Write your name near the bottom of the page. On each entry page, use the top half for your illustration, the bottom half and the back of the page to complete the rest of the entry.
Where to Get the Novels: Barnes and Noble, pre-summer purchase at school
Late Work Policy:
As a Pre-AP student, you are required to submit all assignments by the designated due date. .
Projects are due August 18th. Failure to complete the summer reading project is grounds for removal from Pre-AP ELAR class.
