United Way Asks Area Business To Go Casual For Community

United Way of Franklin County is preparing for its second annual Casual For Community Food Drive, leading into the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. In an effort to help restock food banks after the holiday season and encourage healthy eating across the community, United Way of Franklin County is coordinating a food drive. Local businesses and organizations are encouraged to promote casual day for either January 15th, 16th or both, in an effort to encourage individuals to participate in the collection.

United Way is encouraging donations of fruits and vegetables, especially fresh foods that have shelf life such as apples, potatoes, carrots, cabbage, beets and nuts. The idea is to stock local pantries across the county with healthy, fresh foods that can be utilized by families in need and encourage healthy choices.

United Way will partner for the second time with National Honor Society Students to expand the collection efforts into the Monday, Martin Luther King Holiday by holding a collection in the parking lot of Giant Food Store at Chambersburg Crossings on Norland Avenue, The Waynesboro YMCA, and the Greencastle-Antrim Chamber of Commerce.

In addition, South Central Community Actions will join the effort through their Gleaning Project which already connects with area food banks to provide a link to fresh foods. The Gleaning Project, led by Jay Eury, will facilitate delivery of food to area pantries.

Casual For Community Flyers and Stickers are available through United Way of Franklin County. To join the effort, please call 717-262-0015 or email

Chamber recognized for Service

“The Peer Leaders” sponsored an activity at the Greencastle-Antrim High School encouraging the student body to thank different men and women as well as organizations for service to the community. The Greencastle-Antrim Chamber of Commerce was one of the organizations chosen. We received several thank you cards from students. We are able to work with the music department and drama club in several areas. The middle school band performs at the “Evening Tribute to Veterans”. The senior high and middle school choirs perform on the square during Heritage Christmas Fridays. The drama club organizes students who dress up as our holiday characters who entertain and greet people on the square. The Business Education Partnership committee chaired by Georgia Barvinchack also works with the school to support programs involving career exploration. I also know a number of individuals involved with the chamber volunteer to conduct exit interviews for seniors. Their recognition of our efforts to serve the community is much appreciated.

Orrstown Bank pays it forward for the holidays

Orrstown Bank team members coordinated holiday giving projects to help some neighbors who need it.

“It’s the season of giving, and our community has been so good to us. We wanted to pay it forward,” said Barb Brobst, Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Orrstown Bank.

Chris Brooks, a loan business systems analyst at the bank’s Chambersburg-based operations center, collected stocking stuffers to deliver to cancer patients at Penn State Hershey Medical Center who can’t get home for Christmas.

Brooks saw a post on Facebook from a nurse asking for donations and she felt the need to help. “I can’t imagine what it would be like to be stuck in the hospital on Christmas. Stocking stuffers seemed like the least I could do,” said Brooks.

“Plus, I hate cancer!” she added.

Traci Yohe, loan quality control specialist, and Amanda Hallyburton, loan servicing supervisor, from the operations center organized a Christmas stocking decorating contest during the employee holiday party to raise money for Boys and Girls Club of Chambersburg and Shippensburg.

“This not only encourages team work and raises morale, it gives us an opportunity to raise money for charity,” said Yohe.

The bank’s Mechanicsburg branch on Baden Powell Lane volunteered for shifts ringing the bell at the Wal-Mart on Carlisle Pike for the Salvation Army. “We thought it would be something great for the community that we could do as a team,” said Mike Byerly, branch executive officer.

Many other Orrstown Bank locations also collected the money they would typically spend on gifts for each other and donated it to local families in need throughout.

“We feel as though our money is better spent this way rather than exchanging gifts with each other,” said Rachel Grimm, executive officer for the bank’s Greencastle branch.
