Frequently Asked Questions on the NetID Administration System

DO NOT EVEN TRY TO SEARCH FOR YOUR Net IDs BEFORE June 15, 2016

• Introduction

Please use this document to familiarize yourself with NEIU’s NetID and Identity Management. Answers to frequently asked questions can be found by clicking on the categories listed at the top of this page.

• What is Identity Management at NEIU?

Identity Management is being deployed to manage a user's permissions and access to campus online systems. Identity management uses a single account name for an individual that we are calling a NetID. This NetID is used to access every system that you have access to within the scope of Identity Management. Identity management at this time covers the following systems: NEIUport, Blackboard, e-mail (both Webmail and Exchange), and Novell. Identity Management also sets a single password across all systems involved, which must adhere to our strong password policy.

• What is my NEIU ID number?

Your NEIU ID number is middle portion of the ID number printed on your university ID card. This is an eight digit number even though it is indicated as seven digits as on the picture to the right. When you use it for the Identity Management system you need to use an eight-digit version with leading zeroes. So, the example to the right would be 00221363. The NEIU ID number is only used to establish your identity and the NetID will be what is used as your log in name. YOU CAN ALSO REQUEST YOUR ID NUMBER FROM ME STARTING ABOUT DECEMBER 1, 2015.

• What is my NetID?

Your NetID is a unique identifier assigned by the Identity Management System that is used as your account name for all affected systems. Your NetID is at most eight characters, usually your first name initial, middle name initial, and first six letters of your last name. However, if this matches a pre-existing NetID, then numbers will replace the eight character (and if there's lots of matches, the seventh character as well).

• How do I find out my NetID?

You can look up your NetID by clicking on the Look up your NetID link under NetID Account Administration on the NEIUport login screen at http://neiuport.neiu.edu. From the NetID Account Administration system login screen, click on the Forgot Your NetID? link. You will be prompted to enter your NEIU ID number and the MMDD of your birthday. The system will return your NetID along with your NEIU e-mail address.

• How do I find out my e-mail address?

If you have a new e-mail account, that e-mail address will be assigned by the Identity Management system at the same time as your NetID. Your e-mail address will usually be the first letter of your first name, followed by a dash, and then followed by your last name, e.g. . If the system finds that this matches an existing e-mail address, there will be a number following your last name. You can look up your e-mail address, by clicking on the Look up your NetID link under NetID Account Administration on the NEIUport login screen at http://neiuport.neiu.edu. From the NetID Account Administration system login screen, click on the Forgot Your NetID? link. You will be prompted to enter your NEIU ID number and the MMDD of your birthday. The system will return your NEIU e-mail address along with your NetID.

• What systems will use the NetID and strong password set by Identity Management?

Most NEIU online systems will use your new NetID and password. These include:

1.  •NEIUport accounts at http://neiuport.neiu.edu. This is where you can register for classes

2.  •Webmail for students, http://webmail.neiu.edu

3.  •Blackboard accounts at http://neiu.blackboard.com

4.  •Dialup access to the Internet via NEIU's remote access servers

5.  •Personal web accounts hosted on the ftp.neiu.edu server

6.  •Printing in the student computing labs using Go Print

7.  •Exchange/Outlook e-mail, http://outlookweb.neiu.edu (faculty/staff only)

8.  •Novell Directory services (faculty/staff only)

We expect this list to expand over time to include other systems, particularly those part of the NEIUworks project.

• How does this affect my use of e-mail at work and at home?

Students will continue to access e-mail over the web either at http://webmail.neiu.edu or by clicking on the E-mail icon in NEIUport. This will work the same regardless of your location.
