Whereas,theLamont Elementary School District Boardvaluesandrecognizespositiveschoolattendanceasacriticalelementforstudentsuccess;and

Whereas,goodschoolattendanceisessentialtopupilachievementandgraduation,andsystemicapproachesareneededtoreducechronicabsenteeismrates,withafocusstartingasearlyaskindergarten;and

Whereas,chronicabsenteeism,definedasastudentmissingtenpercentoftheschoolyearorabout18daysayear,isoneofthestrongestindicatorsoffuturedropout;and

Whereas,nationwide,oneoutofeverytenstudentsinkindergartenandfirstgradearechronicallyabsent;and

Whereas,chronicabsenteeisminkindergartenpredictslowacademicachievementinlatergradeswithresearchdemonstratingthatstudentschronicallyabsentinkindergartenandfirstgradewerefarlesslikelytoreadproficientlyattheendofthirdgrade;and

Whereas,75 percent of students who are chronically absent in sixth grade will drop out of high school; and

Whereas,chronicabsenceisoftenoverlookedbecausemanyschoolsonlymonitoraveragedailyattendanceandtruancyrates,bothofwhichcaneasilymaskchronicabsence;and

Whereas,CaliforniaenactedtheLocalControlFundingFormula(LCFF),whichencouragesschooldistrictstotrackandestablishgoalsandspecificactionsforreducingchronicabsence;and

Whereas,increasingschoolattendancerequirescommunity-wideinvolvementandbeginswithanawarenessofthecumulativenegativeeffectsofchronicabsenceonacademicandsocialsuccess;

Now,Therefore,BeItResolvedthattheLamont Elementary School DistrictherebydeclaresthemonthofSeptember2016asAttendanceAwarenessMonthandsupportsactivitiestoincreaseawarenessoftheimportanceofdailyattendance,especiallyintheearlygradesPreK-3.
