STUDENT NURSE POLICY

  1. Policy

The Aurora Visiting Nurse Association in recognition of the importance of the education of future practitioners of health care will enter into contract with area schools to provide quality learning experiences.

  1. Purpose

To define the scope of practice of a student nurse caring for patients within the Aurora Visiting Nurse Association (AVNA)

  1. Definitions

Student Nurse is defined as a student currently enrolled in a Nursing program that provides direct patient care during a semester clinical rotation.

  1. Considerations
  • Clinical hours refers to a preceptorship consisting of one student under the direction of a Register Nurse caring for a group of patients
  • Nursing Students must be senior level to be eligible for participation in the preceptorship program at AVNA unless in the BSN completion program
  • Prior to any student nurse practice at Aurora Visiting Nurse Association, a current contract between the college and AVNA must be in place.
  • The RN caring for the patient or group of patients has ultimate responsibility for patient care, but is not responsible for the actions of the student.
  1. Equipment

  1. Procedure
  • Review Aurora Health Care Student Clinical Placement website ( and complete necessary forms each semester prior to clinical hours.
  • Students are to demonstrate safe medication practices
  • All intravenous medications are to be prepared and administered under the direct supervision of the RN caring for the patient
  • IV medication preparation includes reconstitution, aspirating medication from vials, confirming premixed pharmacy doses and all infusions
  • Direct supervision is defined as being in immediate proximity
  • Students caring for patients receiving blood products are allowed to monitor vital signs during the transfusion and sign the blood transfusion record as the second person to verify the blood component.
  • Students may monitor patients receiving chemotherapy but may not administer chemotherapy. The RN caring for the patient will administer the chemotherapy.
  • Students may not document in the patient medical record
  • Students may perform clinical procedures under the direct supervision of the RN caring for the patient.
  • Clinical instructor will send syllabus to and be in phone contact with AVNA supervising RN
