Terms of Reference GNH Centre, Bhutan: Deputy Program Coordinator

The Gross National Happiness Centre is hiring a Bhutanese deputy program coordinator (DPC) to support the international expert, Dr Tho Ha-Vinh who is the Program Coordinator to the centre, to create, pilot and evaluate new experiential education programs. The programs will be tailored for Bhutanese citizens from all walks of life, as well as international visitors to Bhutan, to be formally launched in 2013. The DPC will learn curriculum design and development from the Program Coordinator. S/he will support development of detailed and interactive curricular modules and courses based on the principles of Gross National Happiness (GNH) under the guidance of Dr. Tho.

GNH is Bhutan’s holistic development approach that seeks to integrate equitable and sustainable socio-economic development fully with environmental conservation, cultural promotion, and good governance.

The position is suitable for a University graduate (BA/MA in education, psychology, social sciences, economy). The successful candidate will be committed to a long term engagement. However to begin, a one-year contract will be signed. Key responsibilities and deliverables, supporting Dr. Tho, Program Coordinator, include:

·  literature review of relevant curricula from international sources;

·  conducting outreach, consultations, and focus groups with stakeholders, agencies, possible partners and key participant demographics;

·  creating detailed lesson plans;

·  developing trainers’ training modules, recruiting course instructors on part time or fulltime basis as the need may be;

·  using unifying frameworks to develop a diverse range of thematically focused narratives or case studies for various courses for both Bhutanese and foreign visitors;

·  planning and supervising two months of pilot programs, and incorporating lessons learned from this “test run” into next iterations of course offerings;

·  developing a framework for measuring participant outcomes and post-course follow ups;

·  learning educational aspects of curriculum development, didactics, pedagogy and so forth with the expert;

·  Organising exchange programs;

·  Supporting the administration on budgeting and control;

·  Writing project proposals;

·  Coordinating with donors, sponsors, and partners;

·  Report writing and attending the meetings;

·  Representing Dr Tho in meetings and conferences;

·  Regular reporting.

The Centre needs a promising professional who can work under heavy pressure, willing and able to learn, develop travel, and be in service of humanity. This position requires excellent communication skills - both oral and written – highly developed social skills and emotional intelligence.

The DPC will work closely with Dr. Tho, who reports to the Director, and on specific deliverables to the Board. The position will be based in the city of Thimphu, in the beginning with ultimate aim to shift to Bumthang, and will involve periodic travel to other parts of the country to conduct research and outreach with stakeholders and pilot sessions.

On a mid to long term perspective, the DPC will become the Program Coordinator, responsible for all the programs and courses at the GNH Centre.

Minimum Requirements:

·  Fluent in written and oral English

·  BA/MA in education, psychology, social sciences, economy

·  1-3 years professional experience in project management

·  Proficient in Microsoft Office
