European Economic and Social Committee

PRESS RELEASE No 2/2005 / 13 January 2005

New horizons:

CCMI widens its scope to new sectors

The EESC’s Consultative Commission on Industrial Change (CCMI) has widened the scope of its expertise from coal and steel to include other areas of industrial change, including textiles, services, shipbuilding and automobiles. The CCMI has now also incorporated delegates from the new member states.

On 10 January 2005 the EESC's Consultative Commission on Industrial Change (CCMI) held its first meeting after its enlargement. The new mandate runs until October 2006.

The CCMI, which was set up in 2002 to build on the expertise of the former European Coal and Steel Community Consultative Committee is now made up of 45 EESC members and 45 external delegates, bringing the total number of CCMI members to 90. Its expertise has now been considerably widened to other aspects of industrial change.

This composition of the CCMI allows for a direct structured dialogue between EESC members and representatives of the sectors and interest groups affected by the whole range of issues affected by industrial change in the EU.

Of the 45 delegates, 15 are former members of the Coal and Steel Consultative Committee, members of the CCMI since its creation in 2002; 15 are representatives of the new Member states, where questions of industrial change are of crucial interest; 15 represent sectors undergoing industrial change, including textiles, services, shipbuilding and automobiles.

The chairman of the CCMI is Mr. Josly Piette (EESC member, Employees). The enlarged CCMI elected Mr. Jacques Glorieux (CCMI delegate, Various Interests) as its co-chairman on 10 January.

Coming up: future CCMI opinions

The main issues currently being considered by the CCMI include the following:

·  Company relocation

·  Social dialogue and Industrial Change

·  Research in the Coal and Steel Sectors

·  Industrial change in the Mechanical Engineering Sector
