PHOTOMONTAGE SELF-PORTRAIT

An Eric Carle inspired project

______

You will be creating a self-portrait photomontage (a montage constructed from photographic images layered together). We will look at some of Eric Carle’s artwork (The Very Hungry Caterpillar) and learn how to paint textures using Photoshop’s fantastic paintbrush pallet.

Step 1 – Capturing images to use in the photomontage

  1. Working with a partner photograph each other capturing the following:
  2. Long shot
  3. Medium shot
  4. Close up
  5. Extreme close up
  6. Create a new folder and call it Photomontage. Upload your own personal pictures that your partner took of you as well as the images you took of them (I will be grading the quality of the photos you took – but you need your own images for the photomontage).
  7. Capture the following images yourself:
  8. Settings that you feel comfortable in (the commons, the library, or somewhere at home, etc.)
  9. You will need at least 3 different scenery shots
  10. Objects that represent you (lacrosse stick, ballet shoes, books, etc.)
  11. You will need at least 3 objects to represent you
  12. Food that you love to eat
  13. You will need at least 3 food images

Step 2 – Looking for wording to represent who you are

  1. Using the Internet, search for appropriate words or phrases that best represent who you are. You can use:
  2. Famous quotes from famous people, authors or artists
  3. Song lyrics
  4. Your favorite sayings
  5. Or you can create your own text using Photoshop
  6. If using words from the Internet you can:
  7. Copy and paste them into a text box in Photoshop
  8. Take a screen shot of words – Use the Snipping Tool

Step 3 – Painting your textures

  1. Using the paintbrush palette in Photoshop paint:
  2. Create a new document in Photoshop and call it TEXTURE 1 – see ex

  1. Be sure to size it just like the example above
  2. You need to create a total of 3 different textures to use in the photomontage. However, you can create more than three.
  1. Select a paintbrush; adjust the settings to your liking.
  2. To resize the brush be sure to remember to change the size under the Brush Preset Palette
  3. Select a color for both the foreground and the background squares
  4. Double click the locked layer to open it so that you can create multiple layers if you want to apply transparencies to any of the textures
  5. Begin to create your texture
