Course Requirements

7th Grade Health Education

Mr. Aagaard

Course Goals:

Health Education is an essential component of a student’s formal learning experience and crucial in the development of young adolescents. A good health curriculum integrates the science of the human body with the care and development of a healthy individual. This includes the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional needs of growing children. This program is designed to encourage students to develop the skills necessary to promote personal, family, and community health.

The program goals are to:

1.  encourage students to develop an understanding of current health issues and obtain and apply health information to daily lives.

2.  promote critical thinking and problem –solving in making healthful decisions with respect to the many challenges that face young adolescents today.

3.  encourage students to develop a sense of responsibility for their health, the health of others, and their environment.

4.  encourage students to become lifelong learners with regard to health issues.

5.  provide opportunities for students to interact with community members through such events as guest speakers, assemblies, and local field trips, enhancing choices, ideas and options.

Expectations and Rules of Conduct:

You are expected to arrive to class prepared to learn. This would include carrying the necessary supplies to complete your work, such as: pencils, notebooks, pens, etc. Todd Middle School encourages students to behave responsibly, respectfully, and honestly. In my classroom, you will be responsible and respectful to adults and each other.

Required Materials:

1.  A section in a 3-ring binder

2.  Pencils

3.  Pens

4.  Colored pencils or colored markers

5.  Textbooks: Teen Health-Course 2 and Life Training Skills

Assignments:

Students are responsible for handing in their work on time. Homework is due at the beginning of the period. Late homework will be given partial, and late work is due by 3:00pm that day. Assignments not turned in that day at 3:00 will be zeros. Late lab assignments and projects will lose 10 points for each day that they are late. Students are expected to make up all work they miss when they are absent. It is the student’s responsibility to check with the teacher to find out what work they missed. As a general rule, students will have the same number of days that they were absent to make up missed work.

Method of Grading:

All assignments will be weighted equally. A cumulative average will be calculated to determine student grades. Assignments included in the course are tests, quizzes, activities, homework, do-now activities, projects, and presentations.

Special Comments:

Seventh grade can be a difficult adjustment for you. With many more teachers and different classes to attend, organization is essential. I encourage you to use your Todd agenda for recording homework, projects, and upcoming tests and quiz dates. I would also encourage your parents to check your agenda and advise you of how valuable this tool can be. It is important for you, me, and your parents to work together in helping you to become a successful student/
