Camross Make no Mistake
Sile Wallace was in town to present her family cup to this year’s winner of the Division 1 Leinster Club League Final 2010 on a fine sunny day in Naas GAA Club. Camross would return from last years defeat at the hands of Raharney to face a young Dublin side in Oliver Plunketts.
The game started with high intensity and both sides taking a point in the opening 5 minutes. Camross were driving forward with their mid-field in particular working extremely hard but the scores weren’t coming for this experienced Laois side. Plunketts began to find their range and with some good work from corner forward Aisling Carolan went 5 points to 2 up after 10 minutes. With some indiscipline in the Plunketts defence however the Laois Lassies tagged on another 2 points from their centre forward Therese Keenan. A slip up in the Camross defence let full forward Leagh West flick the ball into the net and the Dublin side were starting to unease the Laois girls. At this stage the young Dublin girls were 1-4 to 3 points to the good after 26 minutes play. Camross didn’t sit back and with the help of corner forward Niamh Dollard sent over the next 3 points with Plunketts taking one back from a free to leave it 1-5 to 0-6 at half time to the Dubs.
The second half started with all Camross registering 2 points from captain Therese Keenan and Sheila Burke but perhaps could have been more only for 3 wides in this spell also. Plunketts tagged on a point from a free but the ever influential mid-field of Camross duo Olga Parkinson and Sarah-Ann Fitzgerald helped the Laois side to level matters in the 23rd minute. Up until then the game could have went anyway with the Dublin girls showing well in their first final on the Leinster stage. However it was not to be as Camross firmly laid down the marker from now as to who was going home with the Corn de Bhailis cup by scoring 3 successive goals in a row followed by a point. It left the scoreline a little flattering in the end but the Laois girls were well deserved winners by 3-11 to 1-7.
The player of the match was presented to Camross mid-fielder Olga Parkinson.
Congratulations to both teams on a fantastic game and good luck in respective county championships. A special Thank you to Naas GAA Club for a fine venue – pitches and catering facilities were excellent and we look forward to working with you more in the future.
