We will spend time showing work experience pupils how the day to day running of the yard takes place so they will gain a broad view of working life and knowledge in horse care.

The work experience is a good foundation for understanding the ground work involved in the care of horses. We are a small and busy yard and tasks include leading in the arena and out on lead rein hacks, manual tasks such as mucking out, sweeping and lifting. There is the opportunity to watch experts in action in farriery, schooling, young horse handling, chiropractor techniques. For the young person committed to improving their knowledge of horses the yard offers close access to the wide range of activities that a small equestrian business can offer. Pupils need to be prepared for this physically demanding environment and have the correct kit such as, yard boots, riding hat (worn at all times round the horses) waterproofs, gloves and comfortable clothing.

Pupils are also expected to use own initiative and bring with them work books/pads, so that in spare time notes can be taken. We have a selection of books which provide useful information on a range of equine subjects. We also have a heated classroom where pupils can sit quietly to do their book work.

Riding

Riding is not included with the time we spend with the pupils, nor is it given in lieu of ‘help’. Work experience pupils are welcome to book riding lessons in the normal way.

Experienced staff are employed at the yard, younger staff being required to have BHS stage I and their BHS Riding and Road Safety before being considered for paid employment at the yard unless they are very experienced jockeys or owners. The horses are only schooled by experienced jockeys.
