Science Academic Learning Communities for First-Year Students
Information and Application
______
An Academic Learning Community facilitates a first-year student’s transition to college by integrating first-year experience programs with the student’s regular academic work. When community members share the same classroom experiences, Freshman Seminar can more effectively focus on the resources and skills students actually need in their classes. Through participation in an Academic Learning Community, students make deeper connections with fellow first-year students, upper-class peer leaders, and faculty that make for a more successful freshman year.
First-year sciencestudents may choose to join the Science Academic Learning Communities with other students pursuing the same curriculum. Members of a Science Academic Learning Community will enroll in a common Freshman Seminar as well as common sections of the courses that make up the typical first-year schedule for science majors.
There arefour sections ofthe Science Academic Learning Communityfor prospective Biological Sciences, Pharmacy, and Pre-Med/Pre-Dental majors. If you are interested in this opportunity, you can view the first-year course schedules and more details by referring to the “First-Year Experience Programs” link under “Summer Orientation” at
Each section of the Science Academic Learning Community can accommodate up to 20 students. Members will be chosen from among qualified applicants on a first-come, first-served basis. Qualifying early for one of the communities will expedite your class registration process at summer orientation and guarantee that your chosen classes will not close before you can register. To be considered for one of the Science Academic Learning Communities, please complete this application and return it with your Summer Orientation registration form or send it to Leigh Hoffman, 219 Chambers Hall, Pitt-Greensburg, 150 Finoli Drive, Greensburg, PA 15601.
