Textile Decoration
How is the course organised?
This is a 1-year course leading to a City & Guilds Level 2 Design & Craft qualification: 7716-L2-39 Textile Decoration.
You will study:
1.Design: -Design gives you the building blocks to be able to put ideas down and create original pieces in your craft area. It gives you a basic understanding of how to use colour, line, shape, form and texture.
a. You will cover the design elements: colour, shape, line, texture and form.
b. We will do this through studying 3 themes across the year.
i. Sunsets – Colour, shape and form
ii. The Weather – Line and drawing
iii. Nature’s Chaos – Texture
2. Textile Decoration Samples
a. You will learn a range of textile decoration techniques; traditional and contemporary including dyeing techniques such as shibori and space dyeing and printing methods such as batik, block and screen printing.
b. You will work many samples developing your skills and seeing how your design work can be interpreted in textiles.
c. There is also a formal samples folio to create of 10 half-metre lengths of decorated fabrics.
3. Making – You will learn how to follow a design brief to produce craft items. There are 2 making projects in the Foundation Course
i. A metre of decorated fabric
ii. A fashion or soft furnishing accessory such as a bag or a cushion made from your own decorated fabric
The course is designed to integrate these 3 aspects seamlessly, through three themed projects, taking a term each.
Course Delivery
- You attend at the ArtyBird Centre in Carnforth, Lancashire
- You will start in September and meet for alternate Mondays for eleven months, for 1 year.
- You would be expected to put in around a day a week of study to complete the course.
- You are responsible for providing materials and equipment for your course. There is a studio fee of £30 that gives you access to a wide range of art material, tools and dyes.
- The cost for the course will be £750 per year, plus £30 studio fee. Students can pay by 10x£80 monthly instalments each year, the studio fee of £30 is payable up front. Fees are reviewed every year.
Meet your Tutor
Kate Ryanwas born in Scotland and brought up in Northern Ireland. She has settled in Haworth, West Yorkshire and has worked as a secondary teacher in Halifax for more than 20 years teaching Design & Technology, Textiles and Fine Art. Kate has been steeped in textiles as a maker since childhood. “My enthusiasm for felt started with the American felter Pat Spark and continued with Kate Horner at ArtyBird Carnforth. My pieces are inspired by nature and informed by the photographs I take whilst walking. I am a strong believer that there is creativity there to be developed in everyone and I look forward to working with you, sharing my passion for art and all things textiles.”
