Dear Parents,

‘Tis a lucky week to be in kindergarten! We will be having fun with rainbows and leprechauns this week, though personally, I am hoping no leprechauns visit our room. They are very messy you know.

Our new words this week are “him” and “are” and our first 5 pots of gold are up on the wall! I hear a lot of buzz from the kids about how hard they are working on their words at home. Keep it up! We have a little less than three weeks before they are due. During those three weeks, we will be working hard in our guided reading groups! This is the time of year kindergarteners make their biggest gains in reading, and I am noticing great progress! I hope you are too. We will continue to build our skills toward reading at level D or higher by the end of the year.

I am sending home a fun math activity today. It is a slight variation of a workplace your children have been enjoying at school. You may have seen all the copies of “Circles and Squares Race to 20” coming home. Today you have a chance to play “Spheres and Cylinders Race to 20” with your child. See if you can find ways to use those 3D shape names at home over the next few weeks, along with cubes and cones. It will seem awkward at first, but they could use the practice with saying those words and matching them with the correct shapes.

Saint Patrick’s Day is on Saturday, but we will be having a little extra fun on Friday. All children are invited to wear green to celebrate, and we will end the day with popcorn and a movie.

The school store is open on Wednesday during lunch. If you would like your child to participate, please send them with a small amount of money ($1-$3 is usually good) in an envelope or ziplock baggie that they can take with them to the lunchroom.

We have been talking about weather in school this month. It is a time of year when the weather in Wisconsin can change dramatically from day to day, and even from hour to hour. It looks like this week is going to hang in at around the freezing mark. Children should have their winter gear each day to keep them warm and dry. Even once the coldest temperatures pass, please continue to send boots (rain or snow) until after the spring break so that the children can enjoy playing on the field outside, and then leave the mud and boots in the hallway when they come inside.

We are looking forward to a wonderful week in kindergarten. May the luck ‘o the Irish be with you at home as well.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Susan Byshenk
