Reflection from Father Hilary. The Pope in Myanmar and Bangladesh
I realise you were aware he was there some weeks before Christmas. However, there are number of interesting points. He had already arranged to go there long before the Muslims were driven out. The Catholic population is tiny. He likes to go to those “on the peripheries”. That expression indicates people not prominent on the world stage and usually involves the poor-in the widest sense deprived.
In the deeply moving meeting with refugees Pope Francis greeted and blessed a group, grasping their hands and listening to their stories. He said “maybe we can’t do much for you but your tragedy has a place in our hearts. We won’t close our hearts, we won’t look away”. Despite its small size, the Catholic Church runs schools, orphanages and clinics and has enjoyed relative freedom in its work. As ever, the Pope underlined powerfully the fundamental truth of the priceless dignity of every person and so the crucial consequence of treating all accordingly. So the underdogs of this world are top pointing for Francis as they were for Jesus. The implications for us all are obvious. We are all seeing more clearly the precious meaning of “poor” and it should attract us and inspire us to share these insights with others.
Please keep for prayerful reflection.
