Course Description:

In Grade 6, instructional time will focus on four critical areas: 1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; 2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which include negative numbers; 3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and 4) developing understanding of statistical thinking.

Grade 6 Overview:

Ratios and Proportional Relationships

The Number System

Expressions and Equations

Geometry

Statistics and Probability

Helpful Suggestions to Students:

To be a successful student, you are required to do the following EVERY DAY:

A.  Always give you best effort and produce quality work.

B.  Always come to class prepared (that means bringing your math binder, homework folder, agenda, and pencil(s)!)

C.  Always complete assignments on time.

D.  Participate in class and ask questions.

Grading Policy:

Math grades will be determined and based on the following criteria:

Homework: 25%

Quizzes: 25% (each quiz will be counted one time)

Tests: 25% (each test will be counted/weighted twice)

Problem SolvingTasks (PST): 25%

Homework:

Homework, for the most part, will be assigned daily. As per the “no pens in math class” policy, all homework must be done in pencil and work must be shown to receive full credit. Homework will either be checked during class or collected. All assignments should be of you best quality, and be kept in date order in your math binder until prompted to remove them. Students are expected and required to complete every assignment. Any homework that is incomplete or missing will receive no credit. Opportunities may be provided to make up a missing homework, but full credit will not be given. Homework will be posted daily on the district website. Go to www.northsalemschools.org, click on the “MS/HS” box, click on “Staff Pages/Directory”, and then click on “Kathryn Ticker.”

Tests and Quizzes:

Tests and quizzes will be given on a regular basis as a method of evaluating student progress. Test upgrades will be permitted for any student receiving less than an 80 on a test (no upgrades are allowed to be done on quizzes.) ALL test upgrade requirements must be met in order to receive credit.

Problem Solving Tasks (PST)

Students will be introduced to the “Modeling Cycle” which is a template that we will use to complete problem solving tasks. My hope is that this template helps the students to make sense of the problems and persevere in solving them. At the end of the year, students will be creating a portfolio containing all of their problem solving templates, and various reflections of their work.

Attendance

It is very important to attend class daily, as repeated absences will cause a student to fall behind. It is the STUDENT’S responsibility to make up any assignments that they missed while absent from class.

Extra Help:

After school extra help sessions will be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays after school from 2:15 to 2:55 in room E-107 for Ms. Ticker, and Tuesdays and Wednesdays in room E-112 for Mrs. Simon. In addition, all 6th grade teachers are available for SGA (small group assistance) help during period 6 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in our respective classrooms. Students who have lunch during this period are encouraged to seek help when needed during this time.

Please read and discuss this outline with your child, and have both student and parent sign below.
